About Retinol & Retinal Skincare

What are retinol and retinal?

Retinol and retinal (retinaldehyde) are forms of vitamin A, the most studied family of ingredients for smoother, more even and firmer-looking skin. Your skin converts them into retinoic acid, the form that actually tells cells to renew. Retinol needs two conversion steps, so it is gentler and slower. Retinal needs only one, so it works faster at a lower strength but can feel stronger. Prescription tretinoin is retinoic acid itself and is the most powerful, which is why it is only available on a doctor's advice.

You will also see bakuchiol on many labels. It is a plant extract that behaves in a retinol-like way on the skin without being vitamin A, and it is popular for beginners and very sensitive skin.

Retinol benefits: what it does for your skin

Smoother texture and softer fine lines

By speeding up cell renewal, vitamin A helps rough patches, enlarged-looking pores and early fine lines look softer over time.

A more even tone

Faster renewal helps dark marks and patchy tone fade gradually, which makes retinol a useful partner for pigmentation routines.

Clearer-looking pores

Retinoids help keep pores from clogging, so oily and breakout-prone skin often looks clearer with steady use.

Firmer-looking skin with time

Long-term use supports the look of firmness and bounce, which is why retinoids are central to most anti-ageing routines.

Retinol for your skin type and concerns

Retinol for oily skin

Oily skin usually tolerates retinoids well. Light serums and gel textures are most comfortable, and retinol's pore benefits are a real bonus.

Retinol for dry skin

Dry skin does best with retinol in a cream base or with a rich moisturiser layered on top. Start slowly and keep the barrier well supported.

Retinol for pigmentation

For dark spots and acne marks, pair a retinoid at night with niacinamide or vitamin C in the morning and never skip sunscreen.

Retinol for men

Men can use retinol exactly the same way. Apply it at night away from freshly shaved areas at first, as shaving can make the skin more reactive.

Retinol around the eyes

The eye area is thin and sensitive, so use a dedicated eye cream with a gentle retinoid or bakuchiol rather than your face serum.

How to use retinol in your routine

Start low and slow

Begin with a low strength two or three nights a week. After two to four weeks without irritation, move to every other night, then nightly if your skin is happy.

Night routine with retinol

  1. Cleanse and pat skin completely dry.
  2. Apply a pea-sized amount for the whole face, avoiding the corners of the nose, eyes and lips.
  3. Follow with a soothing moisturiser.

The next morning

Use a gentle cleanser, a hydrating serum and a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every single day. Retinoids make skin more sensitive to the sun.

The sandwich method

If your skin is sensitive, apply a thin layer of moisturiser, then retinol, then more moisturiser. It softens the effect without stopping it working.

What to mix (and not mix) with retinol

Retinol with hyaluronic acid and ceramides

Excellent partners. They hydrate and support the barrier, which reduces dryness. Moisturisers with ceramides are among the best things to use after retinol.

Retinol with vitamin C: which order?

Use vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. Layering both at once can irritate, and vitamin C is most useful under daytime sunscreen. See our vitamin C edit.

Retinol with niacinamide and peptides

Both are gentle and work well alongside retinoids for tone and texture. Explore our niacinamide and peptides and collagen edits.

Retinol with exfoliating acids

Avoid using AHAs, BHAs or salicylic acid on the same night as a retinoid, at least while your skin is adjusting. Alternate nights instead. Browse acids in our salicylic acid edit.

Retinal compared with retinol

Retinal works faster than retinol at the same strength and is a good next step for skin that already tolerates retinol well. Start it on fewer nights, as it can feel more active.

Retinol strengths explained: which one should you start with?

Strength or typeWho it suitsHow to start
BakuchiolSensitive skin, beginners, anyone avoiding vitamin AMorning or night, daily
Retinol 0.1% to 0.3%First-time users, dry or reactive skin2 to 3 nights a week
Retinol 0.5% and aboveSkin already used to retinolEvery other night, then nightly
RetinalExperienced users wanting faster results2 nights a week at first

Higher is not always better. A lower strength used consistently often beats a strong formula you can only tolerate once a week.

A simple first month with retinol

Weeks one and two: apply retinol on Monday and Thursday nights and use a plain moisturiser on the other nights. Weeks three and four: add a Saturday night if your skin feels comfortable. Keep exfoliating acids for nights when you are not using retinol, and wear sunscreen every morning throughout. If you feel tight or flaky, pause for two nights and use a soothing cream before starting again.

Common retinol myths

"Peeling means it is working"

Mild flaking can happen early on, but heavy peeling is a sign of irritation, not faster results. Use less or less often.

"You cannot use retinol if you have sensitive skin"

Many sensitive skins can, with a low strength, the sandwich method and a strong moisturiser. Bakuchiol is a gentle alternative.

"Retinol thins the skin"

Retinoids encourage renewal; the temporary flaking is surface dryness, not thinning. With sunscreen and moisture, skin usually looks healthier over time.

How long does retinol take to work?

Skin often feels smoother within four to six weeks. Changes in tone and marks usually show after about eight to twelve weeks of steady use, and firmness benefits build over several months. Consistency matters far more than strength.

Retinol side effects and who should be careful

Early dryness, flaking, mild redness and a slight tingling are common for the first few weeks and usually settle as skin adjusts. Some people see a short period of "purging", where existing clogged pores come to the surface faster. Stop and simplify if your skin burns, swells or stays raw. Retinoids are generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so please speak to your doctor before using any vitamin A product at that time. Calm the skin with a centella cream if it becomes irritated.

Retinol in Pakistan's heat and sun

Strong sunshine and long summers make sunscreen essential when you use retinoids. Many people prefer to start retinol in the cooler months and use a lower strength or fewer nights in peak summer. Keep products in a cool cupboard: vitamin A is sensitive to heat and light, so never leave it in a car or a sunny bathroom.

Retinol & Retinal Skincare: your questions

How do I use a retinol serum?

Use a retinol serum at night on clean, dry skin: a pea-sized amount for the whole face, two or three nights a week at first, followed by moisturiser. Wear SPF 50 every morning.

Which moisturiser is best after retinol?

A fragrance-free moisturiser with ceramides, panthenol, centella or hyaluronic acid is best after retinol, because these ingredients reduce dryness and support the skin barrier while it adjusts.

Can I use retinol and vitamin C together?

Yes, but at different times. Use vitamin C in the morning under sunscreen and retinol at night. Layering both together can irritate, especially while your skin is new to retinoids.

What order should I use retinol, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid in?

Morning: vitamin C, then hyaluronic acid, moisturiser and sunscreen. Night: retinol on dry skin, then a moisturiser that may contain hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid can be used at both times.

What happens if I use retinol every day?

Once your skin has adjusted, daily use can speed up results. If you jump straight to daily use, you are more likely to see dryness, peeling and redness, so build up gradually over a few weeks.

Is retinol suitable for oily skin?

Yes. Oily skin usually tolerates retinol well, and retinoids help keep pores clearer. Choose a light serum or gel texture and a non-greasy moisturiser.

Which is more effective, retinol or tretinoin?

Tretinoin is stronger because it is already in the active form, but it is prescription-only and more irritating. Retinol is gentler and slower. A dermatologist can advise which suits your skin.

How long does retinol purging last?

Purging, when existing clogged pores surface faster, usually lasts around four to six weeks. Breakouts that last longer or appear in new areas may mean the product does not suit you.

Can I use ceramides with retinol?

Yes, ceramides are one of the best partners for retinol. They help repair the barrier and reduce the dryness that retinoids can cause.

Is bakuchiol a good alternative to retinol?

Bakuchiol is a gentle plant-based option that gives retinol-like smoothing with less irritation. It suits sensitive skin and beginners, although results are usually milder than a true retinoid.

Can I use retinol in summer in Pakistan?

Yes, as long as you wear SPF 50 every morning and reapply outdoors. Many people use a lower strength or fewer nights during peak summer.

Is expired retinol safe to use?

It is best not to. Retinol breaks down over time, so an expired product may irritate without giving results. Check the use-by date and how long the product lasts once opened.
