What is body care, and why does it matter?
Body care is the everyday routine for the skin from your neck down: cleansing, moisturising, smoothing rough areas, protecting from the sun and keeping underarms fresh. Body skin has fewer oil glands than the face in many areas, such as the shins, elbows and hands, so it dries out faster, especially with hot showers and hard water. In Pakistan, long summers, strong sun on arms and feet, and dry winters in the north all show up on body skin first.
The good news is that body care does not need many products. A gentle wash, a moisturiser applied at the right moment and sunscreen on exposed areas solve most problems. Targeted products, such as barrier creams, brightening lotions or a good deodorant, handle the rest.
Body care benefits
- Softer, smoother skin: regular moisturising prevents flaky shins, rough elbows and cracked heels.
- Comfort in every season: a barrier cream calms itchy, tight skin in winter and after swimming.
- A more even-looking tone: niacinamide and gentle exfoliants help rough, uneven-looking areas over time.
- Freshness all day: a deodorant suited to your skin keeps underarms comfortable in the heat.
- Protection from sun: sunscreen on arms, neck and hands prevents sun spots and early ageing.

Body care for men
Men's body skin dries out just as easily, especially on the shins, hands and back of the neck. A fast-absorbing lotion after showering, a deodorant that does not irritate after shaving or trimming, and sunscreen on the neck and forearms for outdoor work or sport make a big difference. Many body lotions are unisex; choose light textures that sink in quickly.
How to use body care in your routine
After your shower
- Wash with lukewarm, not hot, water and a gentle, soap-free body wash.
- Pat skin dry with a towel, leaving it slightly damp.
- Apply body lotion or cream within three minutes, while skin is still damp, to lock in water.
- Use a richer cream on elbows, knees, heels and any very dry patches.
In the morning
Apply deodorant to clean, completely dry underarms, and sunscreen to any skin that will see the sun: neck, chest, arms and hands. Reapply sunscreen on hands after washing them.
Once or twice a week
Gently exfoliate rough areas with a lotion containing lactic or salicylic acid, or a soft washcloth. Avoid harsh scrubs, which can leave tiny tears and make dark patches more noticeable.
Body care by area
Hands
Frequent washing, sanitiser and dishwashing strip the skin on hands faster than anywhere else. Keep a small tube of cream near the sink, apply after every wash at night, and use sunscreen on the backs of the hands when driving or outdoors to prevent sun spots.
Feet and heels
Open sandals, dust and heat dry out heels quickly in Pakistan. Wash and dry between the toes, file rough skin gently once a week, and apply a thick cream to heels at bedtime.
Neck and chest
The neck and chest show sun damage and fine lines early because they are often forgotten. Extend your face moisturiser and sunscreen down to the collarbones every morning.
Elbows and knees
These areas thicken and look darker from friction. A urea or lactic acid lotion a few times a week, followed by a rich cream, softens them gradually.
Back and chest breakouts
Sweat, tight clothing and heavy hair products often cause spots on the back and chest in summer. Shower soon after exercise, wear breathable cotton, rinse conditioner off the back thoroughly and choose oil-free body lotions. A salicylic acid wash on affected areas can help; see a dermatologist for painful or persistent breakouts.
A simple weekly body routine
- Every day: gentle wash, body lotion on damp skin, sunscreen on exposed areas, deodorant on dry underarms.
- Twice a week: exfoliating lotion or soft washcloth on rough areas.
- Once a week: heel care with a file and a thick cream overnight; a nourishing massage cream for extra softness.
Body care myths
- "Oily skin on the face means you can skip body lotion." Body skin is often drier than facial skin and still needs moisture.
- "Hot showers clean better." Very hot water strips the barrier; lukewarm water cleans just as well.
- "Scrubbing hard removes dark patches." Harsh scrubbing irritates skin and can make patches look darker; gentle exfoliation works better.
- "Sunscreen is only for the face." Arms, hands and the neck get as much sun as the face.
Caring for underarms
Underarm skin is thin and folds constantly, so it is easily irritated by shaving, waxing, tight clothing and strong fragrances. Darker-looking underarms are common and often linked to friction, hair removal, irritation from products and sweat. Gentle care helps: switch to a mild deodorant, exfoliate softly once a week, avoid dry shaving, and let the skin recover after hair removal before applying products. If underarm darkening appears suddenly or spreads to other areas, see a doctor, as it can occasionally be linked to health conditions.
Dry body skin in Pakistan's seasons
Summer
Heat and sweat make heavy creams feel unbearable, but air-conditioning and frequent showers still dry skin. Switch to a light gel or lotion, apply it after the evening shower, and keep sunscreen on exposed areas.
Winter
Cold, dry air and hot showers are the main cause of itchy, flaky shins and cracked heels from November to February. Shorten showers, keep water warm rather than hot, and use a ceramide cream twice a day on the driest areas. A thick layer on heels with cotton socks overnight helps cracked skin.
Hard water
Mineral-rich water can leave a film that feels tight. Rinse well, moisturise immediately and choose fragrance-free creams if your skin itches after bathing.
Ingredients to look for in body care
- Ceramides: repair and support the skin barrier.
- Glycerin and hyaluronic acid: draw water into the skin.
- Shea butter and plant oils: soften and seal in moisture.
- Urea and lactic acid: smooth rough, bumpy skin.
- Niacinamide: supports an even-looking tone and the barrier.
- Panthenol and centella: soothe irritated areas.
How to choose a deodorant
Deodorants reduce odour, while antiperspirants reduce sweat; many products do one, some do both. If your underarms sting or itch, choose an alcohol-free, fragrance-light formula and apply it only to completely dry skin, never right after shaving. Sticks suit people who want less wetness, roll-ons spread more easily, and care-focused formulas with soothing or brightening ingredients add comfort for skin that is often irritated. Give a new deodorant a week before judging it, since skin and odour can take a few days to adjust.
Body care in the monsoon and humid weather
Damp, humid months bring their own problems: sweat trapped in skin folds, under the bust and between the toes can cause redness and itching. Dry these areas thoroughly after bathing, wear breathable fabrics, change out of damp clothes quickly and use light, non-greasy lotions. If an itchy, red rash spreads or does not settle within a few days, see a doctor, as it may need specific treatment.
Body care side effects and who should be careful
Fragranced lotions and deodorants can irritate sensitive or freshly shaved skin, so patch-test on a small area and avoid applying straight after hair removal. Exfoliating lotions can sting on broken skin; skip them on cuts, sunburn and eczema flares. If you have eczema or very itchy skin that does not improve with moisturising, see a dermatologist. If you are pregnant, choose gentle, fragrance-free creams and check acids or brightening actives with your doctor.
Massage and self-care rituals
A few minutes of massage with a rich cream after an evening shower helps the product spread evenly, softens dry areas and turns body care into a relaxing ritual. Use long upward strokes on the legs and arms and circular motions on elbows and knees.
