About Sensitivity

What is sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is skin that reacts more easily than average. It may sting, burn, itch, flush or feel tight after cleansing, after new products, in hot weather or after time in the sun. Sensitive skin is not a medical diagnosis on its own; it is a description of how your skin behaves. For many people it comes from a weakened skin barrier, which lets irritants in and moisture out more easily.

Some people have a specific condition that makes skin sensitive, such as rosacea, eczema or contact allergies. If your skin is persistently red, bumpy, flaky or painful, see a dermatologist for a diagnosis.

What makes skin sensitive?

A damaged barrier

Over-washing, harsh scrubs, too many actives and hot water strip the protective layer of the skin, making it reactive.

Heat, sun and humidity

Strong sun, long hot summers and sweat can all trigger flushing and stinging, which is very common in Pakistan.

Fragrance and certain ingredients

Perfume, essential oils, high alcohol content and strong acids are frequent triggers for reactive skin.

Hard water and pollution

Mineral-heavy water and city dust can leave skin dry and irritated, especially in winter.

Ingredients that help sensitive skin

Centella (cica) and madecassoside

Calming plant compounds that soothe redness and support recovery.

Panthenol (vitamin B5)

Comforts irritation and helps the barrier hold moisture.

Ceramides

Barrier lipids that help skin protect itself and stay hydrated.

Heartleaf, mugwort and oat

Traditional calming botanicals widely used in Korean skincare for reactive skin.

Beta-glucan and hyaluronic acid

Gentle hydrators that soften tight, uncomfortable skin.

Ingredients to be cautious with

Fragrance, essential oils, denatured alcohol, physical scrubs and high-strength acids or retinoids. You do not always need to avoid actives, but introduce them slowly and one at a time.

Sensitive skin by skin type

Sensitive and oily skin

Oily skin can still be sensitive. Choose light gel creams, fragrance-free toners and gentle low-pH cleansers instead of harsh foaming washes, and use mild exfoliants sparingly. Our oil-control edit has gentle options.

Sensitive and combination skin

Calm the cheeks with a soothing cream while keeping the T-zone light. A centella toner works well across the whole face.

Sensitive and dry skin

Focus on barrier repair: a cream cleanser, ceramide moisturiser and a balm for very dry patches. See our dryness edit.

Sensitive skin around the eyes

The eye area is the thinnest skin on the face. Use fragrance-free eye creams, remove eye makeup gently with an oil cleanser and avoid rubbing. Dark circles on sensitive skin respond best to gentle, hydrating care.

  2. Soothing serum.

How to introduce a new product

Patch-test on your jawline or behind the ear for two or three days. Add only one new product at a time and wait a week before the next, so you know what suits you.

Is cleansing oil good for sensitive skin?

Yes, a gentle cleansing oil can be one of the kindest ways to remove sunscreen and makeup, because it dissolves them without scrubbing. Choose fragrance-free or plant-based oils, massage onto dry skin, add water to emulsify and rinse well, then follow with a mild cleanser if needed.

Which sunscreen is best for sensitive skin?

Many sensitive skins prefer mineral (zinc oxide) formulas, which sit on the surface and rarely sting. Others are comfortable with modern, fragrance-free chemical sunscreens that include calming ingredients such as centella. If a sunscreen stings your eyes, try a mineral formula or a sun stick around the eye area. Explore our sunscreens on each product page above.

Is Korean skincare good for sensitive skin?

Korean skincare is popular with sensitive skin because many brands focus on gentle, low-pH cleansers, fragrance-free formulas and calming botanicals such as centella, heartleaf and mugwort. As with any skincare, check the ingredient list, patch-test and build your routine slowly.

Side effects and who should be careful

Stinging that fades in a few seconds can be normal with some products, but burning, swelling, hives or a rash mean you should stop and rinse the product off. If reactions happen often, keep a simple routine of cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen and see a dermatologist, who can check for allergies, rosacea or eczema.

Sensitive skin in Pakistan's heat and humidity

Heat makes reactive skin flush faster. In summer, keep textures light, rinse sweat off after being outdoors, carry a soothing mist and avoid very hot water. In winter, dry air and heaters can trigger tightness, so switch to a creamier cleanser and a richer barrier cream. Keep skincare out of hot cars, as heat can break down formulas and make them more irritating.

Calming skin after shaving, waxing and threading

Hair removal is one of the most common triggers for redness and bumps. After threading, waxing or shaving, skip actives such as acids and retinol for a day, rinse with cool water, apply a soothing centella or panthenol product and keep the area out of the sun. Avoid fragranced aftershaves or toners on freshly treated skin, and use a clean razor to reduce irritation and ingrown hairs.

Common sensitive skin mistakes

  • Using too many actives at once, such as acids, retinol and vitamin C together.
  • Scrubbing or using rough towels.
  • Changing products too often before skin has settled.
  • Skipping moisturiser because skin feels oily.
  • Washing with very hot water.

Sensitivity: your questions

Which skincare brand is best for sensitive skin?

Brands known for gentle formulas include Cetaphil, La Roche-Posay, Purito Seoul, SKIN1004, AESTURA and Dr.G. The best brand is the one whose fragrance-free, calming products suit your skin after patch-testing.

Which sunscreen is best for sensitive skin?

Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide and fragrance-free formulas with calming ingredients are usually best for sensitive skin. If a sunscreen stings your eyes, try a mineral formula or a sun stick around that area.

Is cleansing oil good for sensitive skin?

Yes. A gentle, fragrance-free cleansing oil removes sunscreen and makeup without scrubbing, which suits sensitive skin. Emulsify it with water and rinse well.

Is Korean skincare good for sensitive skin?

Often, yes. Many Korean brands focus on low-pH cleansers, fragrance-free formulas and calming ingredients like centella and heartleaf. Always check ingredients and patch-test.

Can oily skin be sensitive?

Yes. Oily skin can react to harsh cleansers, strong acids and fragrance just like dry skin. Choose gentle, light products and avoid over-washing.

How do I know if my skin is sensitive?

If your skin often stings, burns, flushes, itches or feels tight after products, weather changes or cleansing, it is likely sensitive. Persistent symptoms are worth checking with a dermatologist.

What ingredients should sensitive skin avoid?

Fragrance, essential oils, high alcohol content, physical scrubs and high-strength acids or retinoids are the most common triggers. Introduce any active ingredient slowly.

How do I repair a damaged skin barrier?

Simplify your routine to a gentle cleanser, a ceramide moisturiser and sunscreen, stop all exfoliants and strong actives for a few weeks, and add calming ingredients such as centella or panthenol.

Can I use retinol if I have sensitive skin?

Many sensitive skins can, with a low strength used two or three nights a week and a rich moisturiser. Bakuchiol is a gentler alternative if retinol irritates you.

How do I patch-test a new product?

Apply a small amount to the jawline or behind the ear once or twice a day for two to three days. If there is no redness, itching or burning, introduce it to the whole face slowly.

Is sensitive skin the same as rosacea?

No. Sensitive skin describes how skin reacts, while rosacea is a medical condition with persistent redness, flushing and sometimes bumps. A dermatologist can tell the difference.

Why does my skin sting when I apply products?

Stinging usually means the barrier is compromised or the product contains an ingredient your skin dislikes. Rinse it off, simplify your routine and reintroduce products one at a time.
