About Salicylic Acid & BHA

What does salicylic acid do for skin?

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, usually shortened to BHA. Unlike water-loving acids, it is oil-soluble, so it can travel into the pore lining where sebum and dead cells clump together. There it loosens that build-up, which is why it is the go-to ingredient for blackheads, whiteheads, congestion and the bumpy texture that comes with oily skin.

It also has a calming side. Salicylic acid is related to the compounds in willow bark and helps tone down the redness around fresh spots, so breakouts look less angry while they heal.

Is BHA the same as salicylic acid?

In skincare, almost always yes. Salicylic acid is the only BHA used widely in cosmetics, so a label that says "BHA" nearly always means salicylic acid. Some brands use betaine salicylate or willow bark extract as gentler relatives with a similar purpose.

Salicylic acid skincare benefits

Clearer pores and fewer blackheads

By dissolving the oil plug inside the pore, BHA makes blackheads easier to clear and helps prevent new ones from forming on the nose, chin and forehead.

Fewer breakouts over time

Keeping pores clear reduces the clogs that turn into pimples. It works best as prevention, used steadily rather than only when a spot appears.

Smoother texture and less shine

Regular exfoliation softens rough patches and leaves oily skin looking more matte and refined by afternoon.

Is salicylic acid good for pimples and acne?

Yes. It is one of the best-studied over-the-counter ingredients for mild to moderate acne, especially blackheads, whiteheads and small inflamed spots. It does not replace treatment for deep, painful cysts or scarring acne, so see a dermatologist if breakouts are severe or leave marks. Salicylic acid skincare for your skin type

Oily skin

Oily and combination skin get the most from BHA. A daily cleanser or a few evenings a week of toner or serum keeps shine and congestion under control in Pakistan's humid months.

Dry skin

Dry skin can use salicylic acid, but in a gentler format: a rinse-off cleanser two or three times a week, or a low-strength toner, followed by a rich moisturiser. If flakiness appears, cut back.

Sensitive skin

Start with a cleanser rather than a leave-on product, and pair it with calming centella. Our centella skincare is a good partner.

Ingredients to look for alongside salicylic acid

  • Niacinamide: balances oil and supports the barrier; see niacinamide skincare.
  • AHA and PHA: surface exfoliants that brighten and smooth; combined "AHA BHA PHA" formulas work on both levels.
  • Centella, tea tree and panthenol: soothe the redness that exfoliation can bring.
  • Hyaluronic acid and ceramides: keep exfoliated skin hydrated and comfortable.

Salicylic acid vs other acids

Salicylic acid vs glycolic acid (AHA)

Glycolic acid works on the surface for brightness and smoothness; salicylic acid works inside pores for congestion. Oily, blackhead-prone skin usually prefers BHA; dull, dry skin often prefers AHA.

Salicylic acid vs retinol

Retinol renews skin from within over months and helps fine lines and stubborn acne; salicylic acid clears pores faster day to day. They can share a routine on alternate nights. See retinol and retinal skincare.

Can you use AHA, BHA and PHA together?

Yes, in a single well-formulated product designed for it. Avoid stacking separate acid products on the same night.

How to use salicylic acid on your face

  1. Pick one format: a cleanser, a toner or a serum, not all three at first.
  2. Start slowly: two or three evenings a week, then increase if your skin stays comfortable.
  3. Apply to dry skin after cleansing, then wait a minute before the next step.
  4. Moisturise to replace hydration.
  5. Wear sunscreen every morning, as exfoliated skin is more sensitive to the sun.

Morning or night?

Cleansers can be used either time. Leave-on BHA toners and serums are best at night, especially in summer, and should be followed by SPF the next morning.

Formats and strengths: which BHA product should you choose?

Cleansers

Rinse-off cleansers are the gentlest entry point because the acid spends only a minute on your skin. They suit beginners, sensitive skin and anyone who wants a little help with oil without adding another step.

Toners and liquids

Leave-on toners and liquids give BHA time to work inside the pores, so they are the most effective format for stubborn blackheads and texture. Apply with clean fingers or a cotton pad after cleansing.

Serums, creams and spot care

Serums and creams combine BHA with soothing or hydrating ingredients for daily maintenance, while spot treatments concentrate it where you need it.

Peels

Wash-off peels with high acid levels are for experienced users only, once a week at most, and never on broken or sunburnt skin.

Most leave-on cosmetic BHA products sit between 0.5% and 2%. Higher is not automatically better: a 1% product you can use comfortably will outperform a strong one that leaves you irritated.

A simple weekly BHA routine

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday evening: cleanse, apply your BHA toner or serum, then moisturiser.
  • Tuesday and Thursday evening: hydrating serum and moisturiser, or your retinol if you use one.
  • Weekend: a calming mask or a rest night with only hydration.
  • Every morning: gentle cleanser, light moisturiser and sunscreen.

After a month without dryness, you can try BHA on more evenings.

Salicylic acid for body acne and the scalp

Back and chest breakouts respond well to the same ingredient. A salicylic acid wash left on for a minute in the shower helps keep those pores clear, especially in summer when sweat and tight clothing make things worse. BHA is also used for an oily, flaky scalp, but choose products made for the scalp rather than putting a face toner on your hair overnight.

How long does salicylic acid take to work?

Many people notice less oil and smoother skin within one to two weeks. Clearer pores and fewer breakouts usually take four to eight weeks of steady use. A short-lived increase in small spots in the first weeks can happen as clogs come to the surface.

Salicylic acid side effects and who should be careful

Dryness, tightness, flaking and mild stinging are the most common effects, usually from using too much too soon. Do not combine BHA with retinol, strong AHAs or benzoyl peroxide on the same night unless a doctor advises it. If you are pregnant, use only low-strength wash-off products and check with your doctor first. Stop if you develop burning, swelling or a rash.

Myths about salicylic acid

"It will dry out my oily skin, so oil goes away." Over-drying does the opposite: stripped skin often makes more oil. Use BHA with a moisturiser.

"More tingling means it is working." Stinging is a sign of irritation, not results. A well-formulated BHA should feel comfortable.

"It works overnight." One application can make skin feel smoother, but clearer pores take weeks of steady use.

Salicylic acid in Pakistan's heat

Humid summers make pores clog faster, so a BHA cleanser becomes extra useful from May onwards. Pair it with a light gel moisturiser and a fluid sunscreen, and keep leave-on acids to the evening when you will not be out in strong sun.

Salicylic Acid & BHA: your questions

Is salicylic acid good for pimples?

Yes. It clears the oil and dead skin that clog pores and calms the redness around spots, so it helps with blackheads, whiteheads and mild pimples. Severe or cystic acne needs a dermatologist.

What is the difference between salicylic acid and BHA?

In skincare they are usually the same thing. Salicylic acid is the main beta hydroxy acid, so products labelled BHA almost always contain it.

Can I use salicylic acid every day?

Gentle cleansers often can. Leave-on toners and serums should start two or three evenings a week, increasing only if your skin stays comfortable.

Is salicylic acid good for oily skin?

It is one of the best ingredients for oily skin because it dissolves into oil, clearing pores and reducing shine over time.

Can dry skin use salicylic acid?

Yes, in moderation. Use a rinse-off cleanser a few times a week or a low-strength toner, and always follow with a good moisturiser.

Can I use salicylic acid with niacinamide?

Yes, they work well together. Apply the BHA first, wait a minute, then niacinamide to help balance oil and support the barrier.

Can I use salicylic acid and retinol together?

Not on the same night when starting out. Alternate evenings, or follow a dermatologist's plan if you use prescription retinoids.

Should I use salicylic acid in the morning or at night?

Cleansers suit either time. Leave-on BHA products are best at night, followed by sunscreen the next morning.

Does salicylic acid cause purging?

It can. A few weeks of small breakouts as clogs surface is normal; painful, widespread or long-lasting breakouts are not, and mean you should stop.

Is salicylic acid safe in pregnancy?

Low-strength wash-off products are generally considered low risk, but check with your doctor before using any acid during pregnancy.

How long does salicylic acid take to clear blackheads?

Expect smoother, less oily skin in one to two weeks and visibly clearer pores in about four to eight weeks of consistent use.

Can I use AHA and BHA together?

Yes, in one formula designed to combine them. Avoid layering separate acid products on the same night.
