About Lips

Lip care and lip colour: what is the difference?

Our lips edit brings together two kinds of products. Lip care, such as balms, lip masks and lip essences, keeps lips soft, smooth and comfortable. Lip colour, such as tints, velvet tints and lipsticks, adds colour and finish. Korean lip products are loved for doing both at once: tints that feel light and leave a natural stain, and overnight masks that make lips look plumper by morning.

Lips have very thin skin and no oil glands of their own, which is why they dry out, peel and darken more easily than the rest of the face, especially in Pakistan's dry winters, dusty summers and air-conditioned offices.

Types of lip products explained

Lip tints

Liquid or gel tints that leave a long-lasting stain. Water tints feel almost weightless; glowy tints give a juicy shine; velvet tints dry to a soft, blurred matte.

Velvet and matte lipsticks

Fuller coverage and a soft-focus finish that lasts. Best for bold or polished looks.

Lip balms

Everyday protection and moisture. Some are tinted for a hint of colour.

Lip masks and sleeping masks

Richer treatments applied in a thicker layer, usually at night, to soften dry, flaky lips while you sleep.

Lip essences and serums

Lightweight treatments with ingredients like ceramides that can be worn alone or under colour.

Which brand is best for lip tint?

Korean brands lead the world in lip tints, and each has a signature feel. Peripera is famous for its Ink Velvet range, which gives a blurred, long-wearing colour. rom&nd's Juicy Lasting Tint is known for a glossy, glass-like finish. Etude offers bright, playful water tints and fixing tints that stay put. The best brand for you depends on the finish you love: velvet, glossy or sheer.

How to choose a lip shade for your skin tone

Warm and olive undertones

Peach, coral, warm brick, terracotta and warm nude shades usually flatter warm and olive skin, which is common across Pakistan.

Cool undertones

Berry, plum, rose and blue-based pinks suit cool undertones.

Neutral undertones

Most nudes, roses and soft reds work. Rosy nudes are an easy everyday choice.

Choosing a nude that is not too pale

A nude should be one or two shades deeper than your natural lip colour. Very pale nudes can wash out deeper skin tones; look for "rosy", "warm" or "well-made" nudes instead of beige-white shades.

How to apply lip tint for a natural or bold look

Gradient (Korean) lips

  1. Prep lips with a thin layer of balm and blot off the excess.
  2. Dab tint on the centre of your lips.
  3. Blend outwards with your fingertip for a soft, diffused edge.

Full, defined lips

  1. Apply tint across the whole lip using the applicator.
  2. Wait a minute, then add a second layer for more depth.
  3. Clean up the edges with a cotton bud.

Making tint last longer

Apply to clean, balm-free lips for the longest wear, blot with a tissue and layer again. Avoid oily foods right after applying, and top up after meals.

Lip care routine for soft, healthy lips

Day

Use a balm or lip essence before colour and reapply through the day, especially outdoors. Tinted balms give colour and care in one step.

Night

Apply a lip sleeping mask in a generous layer before bed. By morning, dry flakes lift away easily.

Once a week

If lips are flaky, soften them with a mask and gently wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh scrubs on cracked lips.

Lip looks for every occasion

Everyday and office

A gradient of a rosy or peach velvet tint looks polished without effort and survives a full workday with one touch-up after lunch.

University and casual days

A juicy, glossy tint or a tinted lip mask gives a fresh, youthful look that is easy to reapply on the go.

Weddings and evening events

Choose a deeper berry, brick or classic red in a long-wear velvet or matte formula, apply in two thin layers and blot between them. Carry the tint for touch-ups after meals.

How to remove long-wear tint and store lip products

Long-wear tints can leave a stain after washing. Soften it with a little cleansing oil or balm on a cotton pad, hold for a few seconds and wipe gently instead of rubbing. Finish with a lip mask overnight. Store tints and lipsticks away from heat and direct sun, close caps tightly so formulas do not dry out, and replace liquid tints about a year after opening or sooner if the smell or texture changes.

Why do lips get dark, and what helps?

Lips can look darker because of sun exposure, dryness, smoking, licking the lips, dehydration or irritation from fragranced products. Skincare cannot change your natural lip colour, but keeping lips moisturised and protected from the sun helps them look smoother, healthier and more even. Petroleum jelly and plain balms are good for moisture but do not change pigmentation on their own. If darkening appears suddenly or patchily, see a doctor.

Lip hygiene: sharing, testers and cold sores

Lip products touch the mouth directly, so treat them like a toothbrush. Avoid sharing tints and balms, never test a tint straight on your lips in a shop, and wipe or sanitise applicators that touch skin. If you get a cold sore, stop using that product until it has fully healed and replace it afterwards so the virus does not return. Use a cotton bud or a clean fingertip for jar-based masks instead of dipping in repeatedly.

Lip care for men

Men's lips dry and crack just as easily, particularly in winter and after long hours outdoors. A clear, unscented balm during the day and a lip mask at night keep lips comfortable without any shine or colour.

Ingredients to look for in lip products

  • Ceramides and shea butter: repair and cushion dry lips.
  • Hyaluronic acid and glycerin: draw in moisture.
  • Vitamins C and E: antioxidant care and shine.
  • Fruit extracts and oils: softness and a pleasant feel.

Side effects and who should be careful

Lip products are generally safe, but strongly flavoured or fragranced formulas can irritate sensitive lips, and long-wear matte tints can feel drying. If your lips sting, swell or peel more after a product, stop using it. Always check expiry dates and replace tints that smell different or separate in the tube.

Lip care in Pakistan's weather

Winter dryness and summer sun both take a toll on lips. In winter, use a mask every night and avoid licking your lips outdoors. In summer, choose lighter tints that do not melt in the heat, keep products out of hot cars and handbags left in the sun, and reapply balm after drinking or eating.

Lips: your questions

Which brand is best for lip tint?

Peripera, rom&nd and Etude are the most loved Korean lip tint brands. Choose Peripera for velvet, blurred colour, rom&nd for a glossy juicy finish and Etude for sheer water tints and smudge-resistant fixing tints.

Which Korean lip balm is best?

For overnight softening, the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is a long-time favourite. For daytime, a light ceramide lip essence or a tinted balm keeps lips moisturised without heaviness.

What does a lip balm do?

A lip balm forms a protective layer that seals in moisture and shields lips from wind, sun and dry air, helping prevent cracking and peeling.

Can Vaseline remove dark lips?

Petroleum jelly keeps lips moisturised and smoother, which can make them look healthier, but it does not change lip pigmentation. Sun protection and stopping habits like licking the lips help more.

How do I make lip tint last longer?

Apply tint to clean lips without balm, blot with a tissue and add a second layer. Avoid oily foods right after application and touch up after meals.

Which lip tint shade suits Pakistani skin tones?

Warm and olive undertones, common in Pakistan, are flattered by peach, coral, terracotta and warm or rosy nude shades. Choose a nude one or two shades deeper than your natural lip colour.

Are lip tints drying?

Some long-wear and velvet tints can feel drying. Prep with a thin balm, blot the excess and use a lip mask at night to keep lips comfortable.

Can I use a lip sleeping mask during the day?

Yes, a thin layer works as a glossy balm, but it is richest and most effective as an overnight treatment.

How do I fix dry, peeling lips?

Use a rich lip mask every night, a balm through the day, drink enough water and avoid licking your lips. Soften flakes with a mask before gently wiping them away rather than picking.

Is lip makeup safe for sensitive lips?

Yes, if you choose gentle, low-fragrance formulas and stop any product that stings or swells. Patch-test bold new shades on a small area first.

What is the difference between a tint and a lipstick?

A tint is usually liquid and leaves a long-lasting stain with a light feel, while a lipstick gives more opaque coverage and a defined finish.

Can men use lip balm?

Absolutely. A clear, unscented balm protects men's lips from dryness and cracking without adding shine or colour.
