About Cleansing Oils & Balms

What do cleansing oils and balms do?

An oil cleanser works on the simple rule that oil dissolves oil. Massaged onto a dry face, it loosens sunscreen, long-wear foundation, waterproof mascara and the sebum that collects in pores. Add water and the formula turns milky, an effect called emulsifying, so everything rinses away instead of sitting on the skin.

A balm does the same job in a solid, sherbet-like texture that melts on contact. Both are the first half of a double cleanse; follow with a water-based wash from our face wash or gentler facial cleanser collections to finish.

Choose an oil if you dislike any residue or live with humid heat for most of the year. Choose a balm if your skin runs dry, you wear full makeup often, or you like a slower, massage-style cleanse in the evening.

Cleansing Oils & Balms for oily skin

Oily skin is often the most nervous about oil cleansing, yet it usually gains the most. A well-formulated cleansing oil lifts the sebum and sunscreen that clog pores, and because it emulsifies fully, it does not leave a greasy film behind. Lightweight oils with heartleaf or centella feel especially fresh in Karachi's humidity.

The key is the rinse. Emulsify properly with a few splashes of water until the oil turns white, then rinse well and follow with a foam. If you skip that step, oil can stay on the skin and feel heavy.

Cleansing Oils & Balms for acne-prone skin and blackheads

For breakouts, oil cleansing is about clearing the day's build-up gently, without scrubbing. Massage for a minute around the nose and chin, where blackheads gather, and you may see small grits come away over a few weeks of nightly use. That is hardened sebum loosening, not a sign of damage.

Pick fragrance-light, lightweight formulas, keep balms for drier areas if you are very congested, and stop any product that leaves new small bumps after two weeks. Acne needs a full routine, so pair your oil cleanse with treatment products your dermatologist approves.

Cleansing oil for dry and sensitive skin

Dry skin enjoys richer oils with rice, bean or plant oils, and many find a balm the most comfortable of all. Sensitive skin should choose short ingredient lists and patch-test on the jawline first.

How to use cleansing oils & balms

Step by step

  1. Start with dry hands and a dry face.
  2. Pump two or three times, or scoop a small amount of balm with the spatula.
  3. Massage over your face for 60 seconds, including the eyes if the formula allows it.
  4. Wet your fingers and keep massaging until the texture turns milky.
  5. Rinse with lukewarm water, then follow with your second cleanser.

When to use an oil cleanser

Use it every evening you have worn sunscreen or makeup. In the morning, a water-based wash alone is enough for most skin.

Common mistakes to avoid

Applying oil to a wet face weakens its grip on makeup. Rushing the emulsifying step leaves residue. Using a dirty finger in a balm jar invites bacteria in Pakistan's warm bathrooms, so always use the spatula and close the lid tightly.

What to look for in a good oil cleanser

Not every oil on a bathroom shelf is a cleanser. Kitchen oils such as coconut or olive do not emulsify, so they stay on the skin and can feel heavy or clog pores. A true cleansing oil contains an emulsifier that lets it mix with water and wash away.

Signs of a well-made formula

  • A clean, milky rinse: it should turn white within a few seconds of adding water.
  • A light finish: after the second cleanse, skin should feel soft rather than coated.
  • Eye-safe testing: if you plan to remove mascara with it, check the pack says it is suitable around the eyes.
  • Gentle extras: soothing plants such as centella or heartleaf, or nourishing rice and bean extracts, add comfort without heavy fragrance.

Double cleansing through Pakistan's seasons

From May to September, sunscreen is reapplied often and sweat mixes with dust, so the evening oil step earns its place every night. A lighter oil keeps the routine pleasant when the air is sticky. In the monsoon, rinse a little longer around the hairline, where residue tends to linger in damp weather.

When winter arrives in Lahore, Islamabad and the north, many people switch to a balm, because it feels cushioning on cold, tight skin. If your skin feels dry even after a gentle second cleanse, try a cream cleanser for that step, or on very dry evenings let the oil cleanse be your only wash.

Storing oils and balms in the heat

Keep bottles and jars out of direct sunlight and away from a hot car dashboard. Heat can make balms turn soft and oils separate. Close lids tightly after each use and check the opened-jar symbol on the pack for how many months the product lasts.

Cleansing Oils & Balms: your questions

Is cleansing oil bad for oily skin?

No, cleansing oil is not bad for oily skin. A good oil cleanser dissolves excess sebum and sunscreen, then emulsifies and rinses away. Follow it with a foam and oily skin often feels cleaner than with a foam alone.

Which is better, cleansing balm or oil?

Neither is better overall. Oils feel lighter and suit oily or humid-weather skin, while balms feel richer and suit dry skin, heavy makeup and travel. Both remove sunscreen well when you emulsify them properly.

What is the best oil cleanser for dry skin?

A richer oil with rice or bean extracts, or a melting balm, is best for dry skin. Pick a formula that leaves skin soft after rinsing and pair it with a cream facial cleanser rather than a strong foam.

What cleansing oil is good for blackheads?

A lightweight, fragrance-light oil with ingredients such as heartleaf or centella is a good choice for blackheads. Massage it over the nose and chin for about a minute every evening, then emulsify and rinse.

Do I need a second cleanser after an oil cleanser?

Yes, in most cases. The oil removes makeup and sunscreen, and a water-based gel or foam then cleans the skin itself and clears any leftover film. Very dry skin can sometimes skip the second step in winter.

Can cleansing oil remove waterproof mascara?

Yes, most cleansing oils and balms dissolve waterproof mascara. Hold the oil on closed lashes for a few seconds before massaging gently, and keep it out of your eyes. Rinse thoroughly afterwards.

Is cleansing oil good for your face every day?

Yes, an oil cleanser is gentle enough for nightly use. If you do not wear sunscreen or makeup on a given day, you can skip it and use your regular cleanser alone.

Will an oil cleanser cause breakouts?

A well-made oil cleanser that emulsifies and rinses fully rarely causes breakouts. Problems usually come from skipping the water step or not rinsing well. Stop and switch formulas if new bumps appear after two weeks.
