About Eyeshadow & Primer

Eyeshadow formulas and finishes explained

Before picking colours, decide on the texture. The formula changes how easy a shadow is to blend and how long it lasts on warm, humid days.

Powder palettes

Pressed powder palettes are the most versatile. A good palette mixes light, medium and deep shades so you can build a full look from one compact. They blend well with a fluffy brush and are easy to layer.

Cream and liquid shadows

Cream sticks, pots and liquid shadows are applied with a fingertip or the built-in wand. They are quick, give a fresh dewy sheen and often set to a long-wear finish, which makes them handy for travel and busy mornings. Korean-style cream shadows often lean towards soft, sheer shimmers.

Matte, satin, shimmer and glitter

Matte shades define the crease and give depth. Satin shades have a soft glow and flatter most lids. Shimmer shades reflect light on the centre of the lid, and glitter adds sparkle for evenings. Mattes and satins are kinder to textured or mature lids; shimmer and glitter work best pressed on with a finger.

What is eyeshadow primer, and is it worth it?

An eyeshadow primer is a thin, slightly tacky base made for the eyelids. It smooths the skin, evens out veins or darkness on the lid, grips powder so colours look brighter and stops shadow from collecting in the crease. In Pakistan's heat, it is one of the most useful small steps in an eye look.

Can you use face primer as eyeshadow primer? In a pinch, yes, especially a mattifying one. But face primers are usually slipperier, so shadow lasts less well. Lid primers are tackier and made for this job, so they are worth having if you wear eyeshadow often.

Choosing shades for your skin tone and the occasion

Most Pakistani skin tones are warm, olive or neutral, and brown eyes are the most common. Warm neutrals, chocolate browns, copper and gold make brown eyes glow. Deeper skin tones look striking in rich bronze, plum and emerald, while very pale shades can look chalky unless used only as a highlight. For office or university, two soft browns are enough. For mehndi, try bold greens, oranges and pinks; for baraat or walima, maroon, deep gold and smoky browns photograph beautifully under lights.

Eyeshadow & Primer for oily skin

Oily lids break down shadow fastest, causing creasing and fading within hours. Always start with a mattifying eyeshadow primer, keep morning eye cream light and set the primer with a sheer layer of translucent powder or a skin-toned matte shadow. Powder shadows last longer than creams on oily lids. Carry blotting papers and press, rather than wipe, before touching up.

Eyeshadow & Primer for dry skin

Dry or mature lids can look crepey, and powder may cling to flaky patches. Use a hydrating, smoothing primer and moisturise the area well the night before. Cream shadows and satin powders sit more smoothly than very matte or chunky glitter formulas. Avoid heavy shimmer in the crease, as it can highlight fine lines.

How to use eyeshadow and primer

  1. Apply a rice-grain amount of primer to each lid and tap it from lash line to brow bone.
  2. Wait thirty seconds for it to set.
  3. Sweep a light, matte transition shade into the crease with a fluffy brush, using windscreen-wiper motions.
  4. Press a medium or shimmer shade onto the centre of the lid with a flat brush or fingertip.
  5. Deepen the outer corner with a darker matte shade and blend the edge.
  6. Finish with a little colour under the lower lash line to balance the look.

Tips for hooded eyes

Apply crease colour with your eyes open, slightly above the natural fold, so it stays visible. Keep shimmer on the centre of the mobile lid and keep the outer corner lifted towards the tail of the brow.

Stopping glitter fallout

Do your eye makeup before foundation, or tuck a tissue under the eye while you work. Press glitter on with a damp flat brush, and lift away stray flecks with tape rather than wiping.

Eyeshadow & Primer: your questions

Can you use face primer as eyeshadow primer?

You can in a pinch, especially a mattifying face primer, but it is usually less effective. Face primers are slippery, while lid primers are tackier and made to grip powder and stop creasing, so they last noticeably longer on oily or humid days.

What type of eyeshadow primer is best for oily lids?

A mattifying, oil-absorbing lid primer works best for oily lids. Apply a thin layer, let it set, then lock it with translucent powder or a skin-toned matte shadow. Powder shadows on top last longer than creams.

What is eyeshadow primer used for?

Eyeshadow primer creates a smooth, slightly tacky base on the lids. It makes colours look brighter, evens out lid discolouration, helps shadow blend and prevents it from creasing or fading, which matters a lot in hot weather.

Is eyeshadow primer worth it?

Yes, if you wear eyeshadow regularly or live somewhere hot and humid. A primer can stretch the wear of your shadow from a few hours to a full day or evening event, and it makes cheaper palettes look richer.

How do I stop eyeshadow creasing in the heat?

Use a lid primer, set it with powder, and build shadow in thin layers rather than one heavy coat. Skip rich eye cream in the morning, and blot oily lids with a tissue before touching up during the day.

Which eyeshadow colours suit brown eyes?

Brown eyes suit almost everything. Warm golds, coppers and bronzes make them glow, plum and purple shades make them look brighter, and chocolate browns give an easy everyday definition.
