About Facial Cleanser

What is a facial cleanser?

A facial cleanser is a wash made for the thinner, more reactive skin on your face. Its job is to lift sweat, sebum, dust and the day's sunscreen while leaving your natural oils and moisture barrier in place. The cleansers in this edit are the gentle end of the shelf: soft gels, creamy lotions, milky textures and low-pH formulas that rinse clean without that tight, squeaky after-feel.

If you love a rich lather and a fresh, matte finish, our Face Wash collection is the better fit, because it gathers the foaming and gel-to-foam washes. This page is for skin that wants care first: dry, sensitive, acne-prone skin using strong actives, or anyone who finds foams too drying in Pakistan's hard water.

Facial cleanser vs face wash: what is the difference?

In everyday speech the two words overlap, and both belong to the cleansing step. In practice, a face wash usually means a high-foam formula that gives a deep-clean feel, while a facial cleanser often foams little or not at all and focuses on comfort. Gentle cleansers tend to sit closer to the skin's own slightly acidic pH, which is why dermatologists often suggest them alongside retinoids, acids or prescription acne creams.

Neither is automatically better. Choose by how your face feels ten minutes after washing: if it feels tight, rough or shiny again quickly, your current wash is too strong and a softer cleanser will help.

How to choose a facial cleanser for your skin type

Facial cleanser for oily skin

Oily skin often gets more oily when it is stripped, because the barrier reacts by producing extra sebum. A clear, low-pH gel removes shine and sunscreen yet keeps the surface balanced. If you deal with blackheads too, a cleanser with a little salicylic acid on alternate days keeps pores clearer through humid summers.

Facial cleanser for acne-prone skin

For acne, the gentlest effective cleanser wins. Look for salicylic acid, tea tree, centella or mugwort in a mild gel, and avoid gritty scrubs that irritate active spots. If you already use a benzoyl peroxide or retinoid treatment from your doctor, a soothing non-medicated gel is usually the smarter partner, so your skin is not over-treated.

Facial cleanser for dry and dehydrated skin

Dry skin needs a cleanser that leaves something behind: ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid or panthenol. Cream and lotion textures, or milky rice cleansers, clean without pulling moisture out. In December and January, many dry-skinned shoppers simply rinse with water in the morning and use a cream cleanser at night.

Facial cleanser for sensitive and reactive skin

Sensitive skin reacts to strong surfactants, heavy fragrance and very hot water. Pick a soft gel or a non-foaming lotion with calming plant extracts and keep contact time short. Patch-test any new cleanser on the jawline for two or three days if you are prone to redness or eczema.

Combination and mature skin

Combination skin is happiest with a balanced, low-pH gel that clears the T-zone without leaving cheeks dry. Mature skin usually prefers a cream or milky texture, since skin produces less oil with age and needs every bit of comfort it can keep.

Gel, cream, milk or low-pH: which texture suits you?

Gel cleansers

Gels feel light and watery, rinse fast and suit most skin types. They are a reliable choice for mornings and for anyone who wants a clean finish without lather.

Cream, lotion and milk cleansers

These creamy formulas foam very little and feel cushiony on the skin. They are made for dry, mature and sensitive skin, and they are kind enough to use twice a day in winter.

Low-pH cleansers

Healthy skin sits at a slightly acidic pH. A low-pH formula respects that, which helps the barrier stay calm and makes it a sensible everyday option for nearly everyone.

Ingredients worth looking for on a cleanser label

The first few ingredients after water tell you how a cleanser will feel. Mild surfactants such as amino-acid or glucoside cleansing agents give a soft clean, while added humectants and soothing extracts decide how comfortable your face feels afterwards.

Be cautious with strong fragrance, high levels of drying alcohol and abrasive beads in a daily cleanser, especially if you are already using actives at night.

Facial cleanser for men: does it need to be different?

Men's skin tends to be oilier and thicker, and daily shaving adds friction. That does not call for a harsh product. A balanced gel cleanser removes sweat and grime without stinging freshly shaved areas, and a salicylic acid option helps with ingrown bumps along the beard line. Wash before shaving to soften the hair, and again in the evening after outdoor work or the gym.

Facial cleanser with salicylic acid: who should use one?

Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble exfoliant (BHA) that works inside pores, so it suits oily skin, blackheads, bumpy texture and breakouts. In a cleanser it stays on the skin only briefly, which makes it a gentle way to start. Begin with three evenings a week, massage for about a minute so the acid has time to work, then rinse.

Skip it on nights you use retinol or a strong acid serum, and pause if your skin turns dry or flaky. Dry and very sensitive skin usually does better with a hydrating cleanser and a separate, carefully used exfoliant from our Exfoliators & Peels edit.

How to use facial cleanser

In the morning

  1. Splash your face with lukewarm water.
  2. Work a pea-sized amount of gel or cream between damp fingers.
  3. Massage in light circles for 30 to 60 seconds, including the sides of the nose and along the jaw.
  4. Rinse well and pat dry with a clean towel.

In the evening, after sunscreen and makeup

Water-resistant sunscreen and long-wear makeup often need two steps. Melt them first with a product from our cleansing oils and balms or a micellar cleansing water, then follow with your gentle cleanser to remove what is left.

What to apply after cleansing

Apply toner or essence while skin is still slightly damp, then serum, moisturiser and, in the morning, sunscreen. Hydrating straight after washing matters in Pakistan, where hard tap water can leave mineral residue that makes skin feel tight.

Cleansing tips for Pakistan's water and weather

Many cities, including Karachi and parts of Lahore and Islamabad, have hard or heavily treated tap water. Minerals in that water can leave a film that dulls skin and stops a gentle cleanser rinsing fully. A final splash of filtered or bottled water, or a hydrating toner applied right away, helps.

In the hottest months, resist washing three or four times a day; rinse with plain water after the gym or a dusty commute, and keep the full cleanse for morning and night. During monsoon, keep the routine light and change face towels often. When winter dryness arrives, move one step gentler, for example from a gel to a cream.

Facial Cleanser: your questions

What is a facial cleanser used for?

A facial cleanser removes oil, sweat, dust, sunscreen and leftover makeup from your face so the rest of your routine can absorb properly. Gentle cleansers do this while protecting the moisture barrier, so skin feels clean but never tight.

Is a cleanser better than a face wash?

A gentle cleanser is better if your skin is dry, sensitive or using strong actives, because it cleans without stripping. A foaming face wash can feel better on very oily skin in summer. Many people keep one of each and switch with the season.

Which facial cleanser is best for oily skin?

A clear, low-pH gel is the best everyday choice for oily skin, with a salicylic acid cleanser a few evenings a week if you get blackheads. Avoid harsh foams that leave you squeaky, as stripped skin often produces more oil by midday.

Which cleanser is best for acne-prone skin?

A mild gel with salicylic acid, tea tree, centella or mugwort suits acne-prone skin best. Keep it gentle, skip scrubs on active spots, and if you use a prescription treatment, choose a non-medicated soothing cleanser so you do not over-dry the skin.

Are facial cleansers with salicylic acid safe to use every day?

Many oily skin types can use one daily, but it is wiser to start three times a week and build up. If you also use retinol or acid serums, keep the salicylic acid cleanser to nights off. Stop if you see flaking or stinging.

What is the best facial cleanser for dry skin?

A non-foaming cream or lotion cleanser with ceramides, glycerin or hyaluronic acid is best for dry skin. It lifts away dirt while leaving a comfortable layer of moisture, which is especially welcome in Pakistan's dry winter months.

How to use facial cleanser and toner together?

Cleanse first, pat your face almost dry, then apply toner straight away while skin is still a little damp. The toner rehydrates after washing and preps skin for serum and moisturiser. Use both morning and night.

How long should I massage a facial cleanser on my skin?

Massage for about 30 to 60 seconds. That is long enough to loosen sebum and sunscreen, and for salicylic acid cleansers it gives the ingredient a little time on the skin before you rinse.

Do I need a separate cleanser if I wear sunscreen every day?

Yes, at night it helps. Water-resistant sunscreen clings to skin, so melt it first with a cleansing oil, balm or micellar water, then follow with a gentle cleanser. This double cleanse keeps pores clearer in hot, humid weather.

Can a gentle cleanser remove makeup?

It can remove light makeup such as tinted moisturiser or a little powder. For long-wear foundation, waterproof mascara and heavy sunscreen, use a cleansing oil or micellar water first, then your gentle cleanser.

Does hard water affect my cleanser?

Yes, hard water can stop cleansers from rinsing cleanly and may leave skin feeling tight or dull. Rinse thoroughly, finish with filtered water if you can, and apply a hydrating toner within a minute of drying your face.

How do I know if my cleanser is too harsh?

Your cleanser is too harsh if skin feels tight, stings, looks red or gets oily again quickly after washing. Switch to a low-pH gel or a cream cleanser, use lukewarm water, and cut back on exfoliating washes.
