What are open pores?
Pores are the small openings where hair follicles and oil glands meet the surface of your skin. Everyone has them. "Open pores" is the everyday name for pores that look wider than you would like, usually across the nose, inner cheeks and forehead, where oil glands are largest.
Open pores are not the same as clogged ones. A blackhead is a pore filled with a plug of oil and dead cells that darkens on contact with air; our blackheads and whiteheads guide covers clearing those plugs. This page is about the pore itself looking stretched or deep, which can happen even when it is completely clean.
The honest truth: skincare cannot change the number of pores you have or permanently shrink them. What it can do is keep them clear, calm excess oil and support firmer-looking skin around each opening, so pores look visibly smaller and makeup sits flatter.
What makes pores look bigger?
- Excess oil: heavy sebum flow stretches the pore opening and adds shine that makes texture more visible.
- Build-up inside the pore: sweat, sunscreen and dead cells collect and widen the opening from within.
- Loss of bounce: as collagen softens with age and sun exposure, the skin around each pore sags slightly, so pores can look oval rather than round.
- Heat and humidity: oil flows more freely in warm weather, which is why pores often look worse in a Lahore June than in December.
- Picking and harsh scrubs: squeezing and rough grains inflame the area and can leave pores looking deeper.
- Genetics: some people simply have larger pores, and that is normal.

Open pores skincare by skin type
Open pores on oily skin
Oily skin shows enlarged pores most often because oil keeps the openings stretched. Choose a gel or foam cleanser, a niacinamide or pore serum, and a light gel moisturiser rather than a heavy cream. Exfoliating pads with BHA two or three evenings a week keep the inside of each pore clear. Do not skip moisturiser: dehydrated oily skin tends to produce even more oil.
Open pores on dry skin
Dry skin can have visible pores too, usually on the nose and cheeks, and they often look worse when the surface is flaky and dull. Here, hydration does most of the work. Use a cream cleanser, a hydrating toner, a pore serum without alcohol and a comfortable moisturiser. Keep exfoliation to once or twice a week and pick milder acids such as lactic acid or PHA.
Combination and sensitive skin
Handle each zone differently: pore pads and clay masks on the T-zone only, plain hydration on the cheeks. If your skin is sensitive, introduce one pore product at a time, patch-test on the jaw for a few days and favour calming ingredients such as heartleaf and centella alongside low-strength niacinamide.
Which product type does the most for open pores?
Shoppers often ask for the single best cream, serum or toner for open pores. In practice, each step does a different job, and a pore routine works when the steps support each other.
Cleanser
The cleanser decides how much oil and sunscreen is left sitting in your pores overnight. An oil cleanser followed by a low-pH foam is the most thorough pairing for oily skin. If you only want one step, choose a gentle gel and spend a full minute massaging the nose and chin.
Toner and pads
Exfoliating toners and pads are where BHA and mild acids usually live. They suit people who like a quick, measurable step, but they are also the easiest to overuse. Two or three evenings a week is plenty.
Serum or ampoule
A pore serum is your long-term step. Niacinamide is the most forgiving choice; retinoids are stronger and better kept for night. Give any serum at least eight weeks before judging it.
Sunscreen and primer
A matte or gel sunscreen protects the firmness around pores and controls midday shine. A silicone primer can blur pores under makeup for the day, but it is a cosmetic fix; cleanse it off properly at night.

Start with one active at a time. Layering BHA, retinoid and strong acids on the same night is the quickest route to redness, and irritated skin makes pores look worse, not better.
How to use open pores products in your routine
Morning routine for visible pores
- Rinse or use a gentle gel cleanser.
- Apply a pore serum or niacinamide.
- Follow with a light, oil-free moisturiser.
- Finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen; reapply if you are outdoors.
Evening routine for visible pores
- Cleansing oil to dissolve sunscreen, sweat and sebum.
- A water-based foam or gel cleanser.
- Exfoliating pads or a BHA toner on two or three nights; a hydrating toner on the others.
- Serum, then moisturiser.
Once or twice a week
A wash-off clay or pore mask on the nose and forehead for ten minutes, followed by a hydrating layer. On mask nights, skip your exfoliating pads.
What treatment is best for open pores?
For most people, the best open pores treatment is the boring one: double cleansing at night, a BHA or niacinamide product, and sunscreen every single day. Results build slowly. Expect a fresher, smoother look within two to four weeks and a more noticeable refinement after two to three months of consistent use.
In-clinic options such as laser resurfacing, microneedling and chemical peels can make a bigger difference for deep or acne-related pores, but they need a qualified dermatologist, an assessment of your skin and proper aftercare. No cream or clinic can make pores disappear completely. Be wary of anyone promising that.
Open pores home remedies: what to skip
Alum (fitkari), lemon, toothpaste and baking soda are often suggested for open pores. They may give a tight feeling for a few minutes, but they disrupt the skin barrier, sting and can leave dryness or dark marks behind. Multani mitti is gentler and works much like a clay mask, as long as you rinse it off before it cracks and moisturise afterwards. Ice cubes give a brief cooling effect only; pores do not open and close with temperature.
Caring for open pores in Pakistan's weather
Summer heat, humidity and road dust mean more oil, more sweat and more grime sitting in pores by evening. Cleanse thoroughly at night even if you did not wear makeup, because sunscreen and pollution still need removing. In Karachi's sticky months, a gel moisturiser and a matte sunscreen keep shine down. During dry northern winters, ease back on clay masks and acids, since tight, flaky skin makes pore edges more visible. Hard water can leave a residue, so a hydrating toner after cleansing helps.
