About Blush

What is blush, and what does it do?

Blush, or blusher, is the colour you add to the cheeks to bring warmth and life back to the face. Base makeup evens everything out, which can leave the face looking flat. A soft wash of colour on the cheeks restores the natural flush you would have after a walk in cool air.

Korean blush is all about that healthy, just-pinched look: sheer, buildable colour placed high on the cheek rather than a sharp stripe under the cheekbone.

Powder blush

Powder is the easiest to control and the longest-wearing in heat. Apply it with a brush after setting your base, and build in light layers. It is the safest pick for beginners.

Cream and liquid blush

Creams and liquids go on before powder, straight over your base. They give a fresh, glowy finish and suit dry skin well. Tap them on with fingertips or a damp sponge and blend quickly, because liquids set fast.

Lip and cheek tints

A lip and cheek tint does double duty. Dab a little on the cheeks and blend at once, then use the same shade on the lips for a matching look. It is a handy shortcut for travel and busy mornings.

Choosing blush by skin type

Blush for oily skin

Oily skin moves cream products around, so powder is usually the better choice. Set your base first, then sweep on powder blush. If you love a cream, use it under a light dusting of powder blush in the same tone to lock it in.

Blush for dry skin

Powder can cling to dry patches and look dusty. Creams, balms and liquids blend into dry skin more smoothly. Moisturise well first, and if you prefer powder, choose a finely milled one with a soft satin finish.

Combination skin

Cheeks are often the drier part of a combination face, so many formats work. Powder lasts longer in summer; a cream looks fresher in winter.

Blush shades for Pakistani skin tones

Undertone matters as much as depth. Warm and olive complexions, which are common across Pakistan, glow in peach, coral, apricot, warm rose and soft terracotta. Cool undertones suit rose, mauve and berry. Nude-brown and muted rose shades work on almost everyone for a no-makeup look.

Light to medium skin

Soft peach, rose and creamy nudes look fresh and natural. Build slowly, because bright colour shows quickly on lighter skin.

Wheatish to deep skin

Choose richer, more pigmented shades such as deep peach, brick, warm berry and terracotta. Very pale or chalky pinks can look ashy, so look for warmth and depth instead.

How to use blush

  1. Finish your base, and apply cream or liquid blush before powder or powder blush after it.
  2. Smile lightly to find the apples of your cheeks.
  3. Place colour on the apples and blend up and back towards the temples.
  4. Build in thin layers until you see a soft flush.
  5. Soften the edges with a clean brush or sponge.

Korean-style placement

For a youthful Korean look, place blush slightly higher and closer to the centre of the cheek, just under the eyes, and blend it outwards in a soft cloud. It gives a fresh, flushed effect that looks lovely in daytime photos.

Blush with highlighter and bronzer

Contour or bronzer goes first, under the cheekbone and around the hairline. Blush sits on the apples above it, and highlighter finishes on the very top of the cheekbone. Blend where they meet so there are no harsh lines.

Making blush last in Pakistan's heat

Heat and sweat fade cheek colour fastest. Layering is the trick: a thin cream blush, a dusting of powder, then a touch of powder blush in a similar shade. A light mist of setting spray at the end helps everything stay through a long day or an outdoor wedding. Carry a small powder blush for touch-ups after you blot.

Blush looks for everyday, office and shaadi season

Everyday and campus

One sweep of a nude or soft peach powder is enough. Keep the edges diffused and pair it with a tinted balm so the face looks rested rather than made-up.

Office and daytime meetings

A muted rose or warm nude, blended slightly back along the cheekbone, reads polished under fluorescent light without looking bright. One touch-up after lunch keeps it alive until evening.

Weddings and evening events

Heavier bridal and party makeup can wash out cheek colour, so go one step deeper than usual and build it in layers. Warm berry and brick shades hold their own next to a bold lip, and they photograph well under warm event lighting.

Keeping brushes and pans clean

Wash blush brushes weekly with a gentle cleanser and let them dry flat. If a powder pan develops a hard, shiny layer on top, lightly scrape it away with a clean tissue so the colour picks up evenly again.

Blush: your questions

What is blusher?

Blusher, or blush, is cheek colour that adds warmth and a healthy flush after base makeup. It comes as powder, cream, liquid or tint and is usually applied to the apples of the cheeks and blended towards the temples.

Which blush is best, cream or powder?

Powder is best for oily skin and hot, humid weather because it lasts longer. Cream is best for dry or mature skin because it blends in smoothly and looks dewy. Many people layer a cream under a powder for the longest wear.

Is liquid or powder blush better for beginners?

Powder blush is easier for beginners. It blends slowly and is simple to build up or soften. Liquid blush is very pigmented and sets quickly, so it takes a little practice to avoid patches.

Which blush colour suits brown skin?

Warm, rich shades usually suit brown skin best: deep peach, coral, terracotta, brick and warm berry. Avoid very pale or chalky pinks, which can look ashy. Nude-brown shades are a safe everyday option.

Can I use lipstick or lip tint as blush?

Yes. Dab a small amount on the cheek and blend straight away with a fingertip. Lip tints work especially well because they are sheer. Patch-test first if your skin is sensitive, as some lip formulas feel heavier on the face.

Where should I apply blush?

Apply it to the apples of your cheeks and blend up towards the temples. For a fresh Korean look, place it slightly higher and closer to the centre of the cheek. For a sculpted look, sweep it along the cheekbone.

How do I stop blush disappearing in the heat?

Layer your blush. Use a thin cream blush, set with powder, then add a light powder blush in a similar shade and finish with setting spray. Blot shine before touching up rather than adding more on top of oil.

Should blush go on before or after powder?

Cream and liquid blush go on before powder, directly over your base. Powder blush goes on after you have set your face with powder. Using powder blush over unset cream can look patchy.
