About Balms & Gels

What are gel moisturisers and balms?

Gels and balms sit at opposite ends of the texture scale. A gel moisturiser is water-based, light and cooling; it sinks in fast and leaves almost no film, which is why it is so popular in Pakistan's hot months. A balm is the opposite: a dense, oil- or wax-rich texture that cushions and protects dry or irritated skin.

This edit brings both together, plus a cleansing balm and a multi balm. For ordinary everyday creams, visit our daily moisturiser collection; for every face cream we stock, browse the full moisturisers range. Come here when you know you want something lighter, or something more protective, than a standard cream.

Gel moisturisers and gel creams

Pure gels are almost all water and humectants. Gel creams add a little emollient for comfort, so they suit a wider range of skin. Jelly creams are bouncier and give a dewy finish.

Repairing balms

Thick, protective balms with ingredients such as panthenol help rough, flaky or irritated patches feel comfortable. They work as a final layer, not as an all-over daily moisturiser for oily skin.

Multi balms

Small, portable balms for cheekbones, lips and dry spots. They add glow and moisture on the go.

Cleansing balms

A cleansing balm is a first cleanser, not a moisturiser. It melts into an oil on the skin to dissolve sunscreen and makeup, then rinses away.

Gel vs cream vs balm: which texture do you need?

Many people use more than one: a gel cream all over in the day, and a little balm on dry spots or chapped areas at night.

Ingredients to look for in a gel moisturiser

  • Hyaluronic acid and glycerin: humectants that pull water into the skin, the backbone of any good gel.
  • Centella and madecassoside: calming ingredients that suit oily skin prone to redness.
  • Oat: a soothing choice for reactive or itchy skin.
  • Niacinamide: helps with shine and the look of pores.
  • Panthenol: found in many repair balms; it supports a comfortable, softer barrier.
  • Peptides, collagen and PDRN: common in jelly creams and glow balms for a plumper look.

Be cautious with gels that rely heavily on alcohol for a cooling feel. They can feel refreshing at first but leave sensitive skin tighter later in the day.

Signs your moisturiser is too heavy or too light

A moisturiser that is too heavy leaves a greasy film after twenty minutes, makes sunscreen pill or slide, and may bring small bumps on the forehead or chin. One that is too light leaves skin tight within a few hours, shows flakes around the nose, or makes fine lines look sharper by evening. If you see the first set of signs, move one step lighter on the texture table above; if you see the second, move one step richer or add a thin balm on the dry zones only.

Lip and multi balm care in dry weather

Lips have no oil glands, so they dry and crack quickly in cold wind, air-conditioning and dehydration. A balm worn throughout the day, and a thicker layer at night, keeps them soft. Avoid licking dry lips, which makes chapping worse. Multi balms do double duty: one compact can soothe lips, cuticles and dry cheekbones, which makes it handy in a handbag during winter travel.

Gel moisturiser for oily skin

Oily skin still needs moisture. When it is dehydrated, it often produces more oil, so skipping moisturiser can make shine worse. A gel moisturiser solves the problem: it delivers water and humectants such as hyaluronic acid without heavy oils. Look for oil-free gels with centella, niacinamide or oat to calm the skin as well. Use a thin layer after serum, morning and night, and follow with a fluid or gel sunscreen in the day. If your forehead is shiny by lunch, blot rather than reapplying moisturiser.

Balms and gels for acne-prone skin

For breakout-prone skin, light gel creams are usually the safest moisturiser choice because they do not leave a heavy film over pores. Calming ingredients help offset the dryness that acne actives can cause. Acne gels are a separate step: apply them to clean skin as directed, let them dry, then use your gel moisturiser around or over them. Keep rich balms to non-acne areas such as lips, elbows or flaky patches around the nose, and choose a rinse-off cleansing balm only if your skin tolerates oil-based cleansers.

Gels and balms for dry and sensitive skin

Dry skin

A gel on its own can leave dry skin wanting more, especially in winter. Either choose a gel cream with added emollients or layer a gel under a richer cream. Repairing balms are useful on the driest areas: cheeks, around the nose and corners of the mouth.

Sensitive skin

Calming gel creams with oat or centella are comfortable on reactive skin. For flare-ups, a plain, fragrance-free repairing balm on the affected spots helps protect the barrier while it recovers. Patch-test before using anything new on irritated skin.

Is aloe vera gel a good moisturiser for dry skin?

Pure aloe gel soothes and hydrates, but it contains almost no lipids, so dry skin often feels tight again soon after. Use it under a cream, or choose a formulated gel cream that combines humectants with emollients for longer comfort.

How to use balms and gels

Gel moisturiser in your routine

Apply after toner and serum, using a small amount spread in a thin layer. Gels absorb quickly, so you can follow with sunscreen in a minute or two. At night, a slightly thicker layer is fine.

Repairing balms as a last step

Use balms as the final layer of your evening routine on the areas that need them. A thin layer over moisturiser, sometimes called slugging, locks in hydration overnight. Avoid it on acne-prone zones.

Cleansing balms as a first step

Scoop a small amount with a spatula onto dry hands, massage over a dry face to melt sunscreen and makeup, add a little water to emulsify, then rinse and follow with a water-based cleanser.

Multi balms on the go

Dab a glow balm on top of makeup or sunscreen on cheekbones and lips for moisture and a fresh sheen during the day.

Cleansing balm or cleansing oil: which is better?

Both do the same job of dissolving sunscreen, makeup and excess oil. Balms are solid, travel well and feel more cushioning, which many people enjoy in winter. Oils are lighter, spread easily and rinse very cleanly, which suits oily skin in summer. For sensitive skin, choose whichever has the shorter, fragrance-free ingredient list. Either way, follow with a gentle water-based cleanser.

Gels and balms in Pakistan's weather

Gel moisturisers come into their own from April to September, when heat and humidity make creams feel heavy and sunscreen can pill over thick layers. During the monsoon, a gel cream keeps skin comfortable without stickiness. When winter arrives in Lahore, Islamabad and the north, switch to a gel cream with more emollients or layer a cream on top, and keep a repairing balm for cracked patches caused by cold wind and hard water.

Balms and gels price in Pakistan

Gel creams in large jars are excellent value for everyday use, while balms last a long time because you need only a little. The live price is shown on each product page. Free delivery starts at Rs. 6,000, and two free gifts are added from Rs. 8,000.

Balms & Gels: your questions

Is a gel moisturiser enough for dry skin?

Often not on its own, especially in winter. Gels hydrate but contain few oils, so dry skin can feel tight again quickly. Layer a gel under a richer cream or choose a gel cream with added emollients for longer-lasting comfort.

Can I use a gel moisturiser under sunscreen?

Yes, and it is one of the best bases for sunscreen. Gels absorb fast and leave little residue, so sunscreen spreads evenly and is less likely to pill. Wait a minute or two before applying sunscreen.

Is a gel moisturiser good for acne-prone skin?

Usually, yes. Light, oil-free gel creams hydrate without leaving a heavy film, which suits most breakout-prone skin. Choose fragrance-free options with calming ingredients and use them alongside your acne treatments.

Can I use a gel moisturiser at night?

Yes. A gel works well morning and night for oily and combination skin. If your skin feels dry by morning, apply a slightly thicker layer at night or add a thin cream or balm on dry areas.

Is a gel moisturiser good in winter?

It depends on your skin. Oily skin may happily use a gel all year, but most people need more richness when the air turns cold and dry. Switch to a gel cream with emollients or layer a cream on top.

Are balms bad for oily skin?

Rich balms can feel heavy and may clog pores on oily skin if used all over. Keep them for dry patches, lips or chapped areas, and rely on a gel cream for the rest of your face.

What is slugging?

Slugging means applying a thin layer of an occlusive balm as the last step of your night routine to lock in moisture. It suits dry or irritated skin, especially in winter, but is best avoided on acne-prone areas.

Is a cleansing balm good for sensitive skin?

Many people with sensitive skin find balms gentle because they melt off sunscreen without rubbing. Choose a fragrance-free formula, emulsify well with water and rinse thoroughly, then follow with a mild water-based cleanser.

Do I need a second cleanser after a cleansing balm?

Yes, in most cases. A water-based cleanser removes the oily residue and any remaining dirt, so your serums and moisturiser can absorb properly. This two-step method is known as double cleansing.

Can men use gel moisturisers?

Absolutely. Gels are often the favourite texture for men because they absorb quickly, feel light after shaving and leave no shine. Choose one with calming ingredients if your skin gets razor irritation.

Is aloe vera gel a good everyday moisturiser?

Aloe gel is soothing and refreshing, but it lacks the lipids skin needs to stay moisturised for long. It works as a calming layer under a moisturiser rather than as a replacement for one.

How long does a balm or gel last after opening?

Check the open-jar symbol on the pack, which shows the months a product stays at its best after opening. Keep jars closed, out of direct sun and away from hot cars, and use a clean spatula to scoop.
