Pigmentation cream in Pakistan: working towards a more even tone
Pigmentation is one of the most searched skin worries in Pakistan, and for good reason. Strong sun for most of the year, heat and hormonal changes all encourage patches of darker skin across the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. The right cream or serum, used patiently alongside daily sunscreen, can help fade the look of those patches and give a more even tone.
This page covers broad pigmentation, melasma-type patches and freckles. If your concern is individual marks left after pimples, cuts or insect bites, our Dark Spots & Scars page is the closer match. The ingredients overlap, but patches and spots behave differently and respond at different speeds.
What is pigmentation?
Pigmentation simply means colour in the skin, which comes from melanin. When people say they "have pigmentation", they usually mean hyperpigmentation: areas where skin has made extra melanin, so they look darker than the surrounding skin. It is harmless in itself but can feel frustrating because it fades slowly.
Pigmentation meaning in Urdu
In Urdu, darker facial patches are often called chhaiyan (چھائیاں), and uneven colour is described as a change in rangat. Freckles are small sun-related dots that many people also include under the same word.
Are pigmentation and freckles the same?
Not quite. Freckles are small, flat, light-brown dots, often inherited, that darken in summer and fade in winter. Pigmentation is a wider term for any extra colour, including larger patches. Freckles are a type of pigmentation, but not all pigmentation is freckles.
Melasma or pigmentation?
Melasma is a specific pattern: symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches on the cheeks, forehead, nose bridge or upper lip, often linked to hormones, pregnancy or contraceptive pills and made worse by sun and heat. It is common in South Asian skin. Melasma can be stubborn and tends to return, so if you think you have it, please see a dermatologist, who can confirm it and plan care with you.
What causes pigmentation and freckles?
- Sun exposure: UV light is the biggest trigger. Even short daily exposure on the school run or in traffic adds up.
- Heat and visible light: warmth from kitchens, stoves and long summers can deepen melasma-type patches.
- Hormones: pregnancy, pills and hormonal shifts often start or worsen patches.
- Skin irritation: harsh scrubs, threading, waxing and picking can leave darker areas, especially on deeper skin tones.
- Genetics: freckles and a tendency to melasma both run in families.
None of this means you did something wrong. It does mean that sun protection matters as much as any cream.
Pigmentation and freckles for dark spots: how they differ
Patches vs spots
Pigmentation patches are broad and often symmetrical; dark spots are single marks with a clear edge, usually left after a pimple or injury. Spots often fade faster once the cause stops.
Choosing the right routine for pigmentation
Patches respond best to gentle, steady ingredients used for months, such as tranexamic acid and niacinamide, plus strict sun care. Strong peels can irritate and make patches darker, so go slowly. For acne marks, also look at the Acne & Blemishes edit to reduce new spots.
Ingredients that help fade the look of pigmentation
Tranexamic acid (TXA)
A gentle favourite for patchy pigmentation and melasma-prone skin. It helps calm the signals that lead to extra colour and is usually well tolerated.
Niacinamide
Helps reduce the transfer of pigment to the skin surface and supports the barrier. It pairs well with TXA, which is why many serums here combine the two.
Alpha arbutin
A gentle brightening ingredient for a more even-looking tone. Rice extracts are often paired with it for radiance.
Vitamin C
An antioxidant that supports brightness and helps protect against daily environmental stress when used under sunscreen.
Retinal and other retinoids
Speed up skin renewal so darker cells are shed sooner. Use at night, start slowly and never skip SPF.
Glutathione, kojic and azelaic acid
Often used for radiance and tone in creams and eye products. Results vary, so think of them as supporting ingredients rather than the main step.
How to use pigmentation and freckle care
Morning
- Cleanse gently; avoid scrubbing patchy areas.
- Apply a niacinamide, TXA or vitamin C serum.
- Moisturise.
- Apply SPF 50 PA++++ generously, and reapply every two to three hours outdoors.
Evening
- Double cleanse to remove sunscreen.
- Use your tone serum or a brightening pad.
- Two or three nights a week, add a retinoid if your skin tolerates it.
- Finish with a cream to keep the barrier calm.
How long does it take?
Expect gradual change: often eight to twelve weeks for a visible difference, and longer for melasma. Taking progress photos in the same light every month helps you judge honestly.
Sunscreen: the step that decides your results
No pigmentation serum can keep up with unprotected sun. Choose broad-spectrum SPF 50 with high UVA protection, use about two finger-lengths for the face and neck, and reapply. Tinted sunscreens with iron oxides also help block visible light, which matters for melasma. Add a cap, dupatta or umbrella in peak midday hours.
Pigmentation care by skin type
Oily skin
Choose watery serums, toner pads and gel creams so you do not feel greasy under SPF.
Dry skin
Layer your tone serum under a richer cream, and keep retinoids to a couple of nights a week.
Sensitive skin
Start with niacinamide or TXA at lower strengths and patch-test. Irritation can itself cause more pigmentation.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding
Hormonal patches often appear in pregnancy, sometimes called the "mask of pregnancy". Retinoids are generally avoided at this time, so ask your doctor before using any active. Gentle care, a mineral or tinted sunscreen and shade are the safest starting points, and many patches soften on their own in the months after delivery.
What to avoid with pigmentation
Be wary of unlabelled "formula" creams sold loose or without a brand, and of any cream that promises to change your skin colour within days. Some of these have been found to contain steroids or mercury, which can thin skin and cause lasting harm. Skip lemon juice, toothpaste and harsh home scrubs too. Buy from trusted sellers and stick to proven ingredients.
