What is the difference between highlighter, contour and bronzer?

All three shape the face with light and shadow, but they do different jobs. Highlighter brings features forward, contour pushes them back and bronzer adds sun-kissed warmth.

Highlighter

Highlighter reflects light. You place it on the high points of the face, such as the tops of the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, the cupid's bow and the brow bone, to make them look lifted and luminous.

Contour

Contour is a cool-toned, matte shade a little deeper than your skin. It mimics natural shadow, so it goes under the cheekbones, along the jaw and at the sides of the nose to sculpt and define.

Bronzer

Bronzer is warmer and often has a soft sheen. It goes where the sun would naturally hit, across the forehead, cheeks and nose, to warm up the complexion rather than carve out shape.

How to use highlighter & contour

  1. Apply your base, concealer and any cream products first.
  2. Sweep contour in the hollow under each cheekbone, from the ear towards the mouth, stopping in line with the outer corner of the eye.
  3. Blend upwards so there is no hard line.
  4. Add blush on the apples of the cheeks, just above the contour.
  5. Tap highlighter on the top of the cheekbones and the other high points.
  6. Set with a light mist or powder, avoiding the highlighted areas if you want maximum glow.

For a soft Korean look, skip heavy contour and use just a whisper of shadow under the cheekbones, with a sheer, dewy highlight on top.

Choosing highlight and contour for your skin

Oily and combination skin

Choose finely milled powder highlighters and place them only on the cheekbones, away from the T-zone, so the glow does not read as shine. Powder contour holds best in the heat.

Dry and mature skin

Cream and liquid formulas melt into skin and avoid a dusty look. Avoid chunky glitter, which can emphasise texture and fine lines.

Shades for Pakistani skin tones

Warm and olive complexions glow in gold, champagne, peach and bronze highlighters. Very icy, white or silver shades can look ashy on wheatish and deeper skin. For contour, pick a shade two steps deeper than your skin with a neutral or soft taupe undertone, not orange.

Daytime glow vs evening shine

For daytime and the office

Keep it sheer. A cream or liquid highlighter tapped on with a fingertip gives a lit-from-within sheen that looks like healthy skin in natural light. Contour should be barely there, if you use it at all.

For weddings and evening events

Build intensity with a powder highlighter over a cream one, and define the cheekbones and jaw a little more, since strong event lighting flattens the face. Check your look in the mirror under the lighting you will actually be in, and remember that flash photography exaggerates shimmer.

Keeping it fresh in the heat

In summer and the monsoon, sweat can make a highlight look greasy and contour slide. Blot before touching up, use powder formulas on top of creams, and finish with a light setting spray so everything melts together without moving.

Highlighter & Contour: your questions

What is the difference between highlighter and contour?

Highlighter reflects light to bring features forward, while contour is a matte shadow shade that makes areas recede. Highlighter goes on the high points of the face, and contour goes in the hollows under the cheekbones and along the jaw.

What is the difference between bronzer and contour?

Contour is cooler and matte, used to create shadow and shape. Bronzer is warmer, often with a soft sheen, and is used to add sun-kissed warmth where the sun naturally hits the face.

Is contour and highlighter the same thing?

No. They are opposites that work together. Contour adds shadow to sculpt, and highlighter adds light to lift. Used together, they give the face more dimension.

In what order do I apply contour, blush and highlighter?

Apply contour first, under the cheekbones, then blush on the apples of the cheeks, then highlighter on the tops of the cheekbones. Blend where they meet so there are no harsh edges.

Which highlighter shade suits brown skin?

Gold, champagne, peach and bronze highlighters suit brown and olive skin best. Very icy white or silver shades can look ashy, so choose warmer metallic tones.

Can I use highlighter on oily skin?

Yes. Choose a finely milled powder and place it only on the tops of the cheekbones, away from the nose and forehead. Set the rest of your face with powder so the glow looks intentional rather than shiny.
