About Attar

What is attar?

Attar (also written ittar or itr) is a perfume oil. Traditionally, flowers, woods or resins were distilled into a base oil such as sandalwood, producing a rich scent with no alcohol. Many modern attars blend natural and synthetic aroma materials in a light carrier oil, which keeps them consistent and easier to afford. In English it is simply called perfume oil or concentrated perfume oil.

Because it is so concentrated, a tiny amount goes a long way. Attar sits close to the skin, warms with your body and unfolds slowly over hours, which is why it has been loved across South Asia and the Gulf for centuries.

Attar vs alcohol-based perfume

A spray perfume uses alcohol to lift the scent into the air, so it projects strongly at first and dries in seconds. Attar has no alcohol to evaporate, so it projects less but clings longer, especially on fabric. Some people with dry or easily irritated skin find oils more comfortable. If you prefer a spray you can share with your partner, see our unisex perfume guide.

Popular attar notes

  • Oud: deep, smoky and resinous; the signature of formal evenings.
  • Rose: from dewy and fresh to rich and jammy, worn by men and women alike.
  • White musk: clean and powdery, a gentle everyday choice.
  • Sandalwood and amber: creamy, warm and long-lasting.
  • Jasmine (motia) and saffron: heady and festive, popular in the wedding season.
  • Mitti: the smell of rain on dry earth, a much-loved summer note.

How to choose the right attar

Attar for men

Men often reach for oud, vetiver, sandalwood, amber or spicy blends with saffron and cardamom. For daily wear and office hours, a lighter musk or sandalwood is easier on colleagues. For a groom, or a guest at a barat, a richer oud blend feels suitably grand. Browse more ideas on our men's perfume hub.

Attar for women

Rose, jasmine, white musk and soft amber blends are favourites, and many women layer a rose oil under a floral spray for extra depth. Our women's perfume hub covers sprays to pair with it.

Choosing for heat and occasions

In June, heavy oud can feel overwhelming, so lean on mitti, musk, light rose or citrus-sandal blends. Winter, Eid nights and the shaadi season are the time for oud, amber and saffron. Because oils intensify on warm skin, always apply less in summer than you would in December.

Best Attar in Pakistan: what to look for

Our attar edit is on its way, and new stock is arriving. When choosing any attar, look for:

  • A sealed bottle with a batch code and the maker's details on the label.
  • A clear list of the main notes, so you know what you are buying.
  • A roller-ball or glass dipper that closes tightly, so the oil does not leak in your bag.
  • A scent that still smells good an hour after applying, not just in the first minute.

Not sure where to start? Small sizes from our miniatures hub are a sensible way to test a note before committing.

Attar price in Pakistan

Attar costs vary widely. Pure oud and natural rose oils are among the most precious materials in perfumery, while blends built on modern aroma materials cost far less. Bottle size matters too: attars are often sold in very small volumes because a few drops last for weeks. The live price will be shown on each product page, and orders over Rs. 6,000 qualify for free delivery across Pakistan.

How to use attar

  1. Apply to warm pulse points: wrists, the inner elbow, behind the ears and the base of the neck.
  2. Use one or two touches only. Roll or dab lightly; attar is strong.
  3. Leave it to settle. Avoid rubbing, which flattens the opening notes.
  4. Top up in the evening rather than reapplying every hour.

Roll-on or dipper?

A roll-on gives you a neat, measured line and is easy to carry. A glass dipper lets you place a single drop exactly where you want it. Both behave the same once the oil is on your skin.

Using attar on clothes

A dab on a cotton cuff or a scarf can hold scent for days. Oils may mark silk, chiffon and pale colours, so test on a hidden seam first. Patch-test on your inner arm too if your skin is sensitive.

Storing and gifting attar

Keep attar upright, tightly closed and away from sunlight and hot cars, which can change the scent. A boxed attar makes a thoughtful Eid or wedding gift; see our perfume gift sets, the full fragrance edit or our bestsellers while the range arrives. Everything we sell is 100% original and covered by a 7-day return guarantee if a product is ever found inauthentic.

Attar: your questions

What is attar made of?

Attar is a concentrated perfume oil. Traditional attars are made by distilling flowers, woods or resins into a base oil such as sandalwood, while many modern versions blend natural and synthetic aroma materials in a light carrier oil.

Is attar alcohol-free?

Most attars are oil-based and contain no alcohol, which is one reason people choose them. Formulas differ, though, so check the label or ingredient list on the bottle if alcohol-free matters to you.

How do I make attar last longer?

Apply it to moisturised pulse points, add a touch to a cotton cuff or scarf, and avoid rubbing. Oils naturally last longer than sprays, and fabric holds attar for much longer than skin does.

Which attar is best for summer in Pakistan?

Light notes such as mitti, white musk, fresh rose and sandalwood blends suit the heat best. Apply less than you would in winter, because warm skin makes oils stronger and heavier.

Can women wear oud attar?

Yes. Oud is traditionally worn by everyone in the region, and many women pair it with rose for a softer, richer blend. Choose a lighter oud for daytime and a deeper one for evening events.

Will attar stain my clothes?

It can. Perfume oils may leave marks on silk, chiffon and pale fabrics. Test on a hidden seam first, or apply to your skin and let it absorb before you get dressed.

Is attar better than perfume?

Neither is better; they suit different moods. Attar is intimate, long-lasting and usually alcohol-free, while a spray perfume projects more and dries instantly. Many people own both and choose by occasion.
