What is lip care, and how is a lip balm different from a lip mask?
Lip care is everything you put on your lips to keep them soft, smooth and comfortable, as opposed to lip colour. Lips have a thinner outer layer than the rest of your face and almost no oil glands, so they lose water quickly and need more frequent help. The right product depends on whether you want quick daytime comfort, a glossy finish or serious overnight repair.
This collection sits in our Lips & Eye Care column alongside eye care; for lipsticks and tints, look in the makeup aisle instead.
Lip balm
A balm is a light, everyday layer you can reapply through the day. It softens and adds a little shine without feeling heavy, and it is the easiest step to keep in your bag.
Lip mask
A lip mask is thicker and richer, built to sit on the lips for longer. Overnight versions go on at bedtime, while glazed or cooling masks can double as a glossy daytime balm.
Lip essence
A lip essence is a lighter, serum-like formula, often with ceramides, that supports the lips' moisture barrier. It works well under lip colour or on its own when you want comfort without gloss.
Why lips get so dry in Pakistan
Several local habits and conditions work against your lips. Summer heat and long hours in air conditioning both draw moisture out, while winter wind in the north and dry indoor heating leave lips cracked by evening. Dust, strong sun and frequent lip-licking during a busy day add to the problem.
Long matte lipstick wear, spicy food and not drinking enough water during fasts in Ramazan can also leave lips flaky. A simple routine of balm by day and a mask at night handles most of this.
How to choose lip care for your lips
For dry, chapped and flaky lips
Choose a rich, cushioning lip mask at night and a balm or ceramide lip essence in the day. Avoid picking at flakes; a mask softens them so they lift away gently with a damp cloth in the morning.
Lip balm for glow
If you love a glassy, healthy-looking shine, choose a glazed lip mask or a glossy balm. These give lips a plump, reflective finish on their own and add a soft sheen over a sheer tint. For a natural glow on a no-makeup day, a single coat is enough.
Lip balm for men
Lip care is not a women-only step. Men's lips chap just as easily from sun, wind and dehydration, and many prefer an invisible balm or a cooling mint formula that leaves no shine. Apply it after shaving and before heading out; a fragrance-light balm is easiest to wear all day.
Lips that look darker or uneven
Lips can look darker from sun exposure, dryness, smoking or constant licking. Keeping them moisturised and protected from sun helps them look smoother and healthier, but no balm changes your natural lip colour. If darkening is sudden or patchy, see a dermatologist to rule out other causes.
How to use lip balm & lip care
- Morning: apply a thin layer of balm or lip essence after your skincare and before lip colour.
- Through the day: reapply whenever lips feel tight, especially after eating or drinking.
- Before bed: smooth on a generous layer of lip mask as the last step of your night routine.
- Next morning: wipe away any leftover with a soft, damp cloth to lift softened flakes.
If you spend long periods outdoors, use your face sunscreen around the lip line, or choose a lip product with SPF, as lips burn easily in Pakistan's strong sun.
Should you exfoliate your lips?
Only gently, and only when flakes build up. Once a week is plenty for most people. A soft, damp washcloth after an overnight mask lifts loose skin without scraping, and it is kinder than rubbing with a toothbrush or a gritty homemade mix. Skip exfoliation completely if your lips are cracked, bleeding or sore.
Storing lip products in the heat
Balms and masks soften quickly in a hot car or a sunny handbag, and repeated melting changes the texture. Keep them in a cool drawer at home, use the spatula that comes with a pot rather than your finger, and replace any product that smells off or has separated.

Lip oils feel lovely but usually do less for very dry lips than a balm or mask, because they wear off quickly. If your lips crack, choose a mask at night and a balm by day.
