What is azelaic acid, and what is it used for?
Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid naturally found in grains such as barley and wheat, and also produced by yeast that lives on the skin. Skincare uses a lab-made version. It is unusual because it does several jobs at once: it helps keep pores clear, reduces the bacteria linked to breakouts, calms the look of redness and slows excess pigment production. That makes it a favourite for skin that has spots, redness and dark marks at the same time.
It is also gentler than many acne ingredients. Azelaic acid does not peel the skin the way strong exfoliating acids do, and many people who cannot tolerate retinoids or benzoyl peroxide find it comfortable after a short adjustment period.
Is azelaic acid only used for acne?
No. Acne is the best-known use, but azelaic acid is just as valued for redness-prone skin, post-acne marks and uneven tone. Dermatologists also use higher-strength prescription versions as part of plans for rosacea and melasma, which are medical conditions that need a proper diagnosis.
Azelaic acid benefits
Fewer clogged pores and breakouts
It gently normalises how skin cells shed inside the pore and reduces breakout-causing bacteria, so new spots form less often.
Calmer-looking redness
Its soothing effect helps flushed cheeks and inflamed spots look less red, which is why some formulas are labelled for redness.
A more even tone
By slowing overactive pigment cells, azelaic acid helps even tone and fade the look of dark spots and post-acne marks over a couple of months.
Azelaic acid for acne, oily and sensitive skin
Azelaic Acid for acne
For mild to moderate breakouts, especially red, inflamed bumps, azelaic acid is a strong everyday option. It also tackles the marks spots leave behind, so it covers two concerns in one step. Severe, cystic or scarring acne still needs a dermatologist, who may combine azelaic acid with other prescription care.
Azelaic Acid for oily skin
Oily skin generally does very well with it. Serums absorb without residue, and steady use helps the T-zone stay clearer through Pakistan's humid summer months. Pair it with a light gel moisturiser and, for extra oil balance, niacinamide.
Dry and sensitive skin
Dry skin should apply azelaic acid under a richer moisturiser. Sensitive skin often tolerates it well, though a mild tingle or itch in the first two weeks is common. Formulas that include hyaluronic acid or soothing ingredients make that start easier.
Azelaic acid strengths and formats
Cosmetic serums commonly sit around 10%, as both of our picks do. Higher-strength creams and gels are prescription products in many countries and should be used only with a doctor's advice. Serums are the most practical format for daily use because they layer neatly under moisturiser and sunscreen. Some formulas feel slightly grainy or creamy rather than watery; that is normal for this ingredient, which does not dissolve easily.
How to use azelaic acid
- Cleanse gently and pat your skin completely dry.
- Apply a pea-sized amount of serum to the whole face, or to breakout and redness zones.
- Start once a day for the first two weeks, then move to morning and evening if your skin is comfortable.
- Moisturise to reduce tingling and dryness.
- Apply sunscreen every morning; marks fade only if you protect them from new UV damage.
Using azelaic acid for hyperpigmentation
Apply it over the whole area of uneven tone rather than dotting it on individual spots, since pigment usually spreads wider than you can see. Give it at least eight to twelve weeks and pair it with strict sun protection. Combining it with alpha arbutin or tranexamic acid can help stubborn marks.
Morning or night?
Azelaic acid is not sun-sensitising, so it works at either time. Many people use it in the morning under sunscreen and keep evenings for other actives.
What to pair with azelaic acid, and what not to mix
- Niacinamide: a popular, calming combination for oily, marked skin.
- Hydration: hyaluronic acid softens the initial tingle.
- Exfoliants: use an AHA BHA or glycolic acid product on different evenings, not layered on top.
- Retinoids: tretinoin or adapalene can be combined only as your dermatologist directs, often on alternate nights at first.
- Hydroquinone: a prescription ingredient; do not combine it with anything without a doctor's plan.
How long does azelaic acid take to work?
Redness and inflamed spots often look calmer within two to four weeks. Breakouts and uneven tone take around two to three months of twice-daily use. Some people notice a few extra spots in the first weeks as pores clear, but breakouts in new areas or burning that lasts are signs to stop.
Side effects and who should be careful
Tingling, itching, mild warmth and slight dryness are the usual early side effects and tend to settle. Stop if you develop swelling, blistering or a rash. Avoid applying it to broken skin or around the eyes and lips. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please ask your doctor before starting azelaic acid or any other active ingredient.
Azelaic acid in Pakistan's climate
Heat and sweat can make azelaic acid tingle more, so in summer apply it to cool, dry skin after you have settled indoors. Strong sun quickly darkens post-acne marks, which makes daily sunscreen non-negotiable here. In winter, add a thicker moisturiser to balance dry air and hard water.
