What is powder pact, and how is it different from loose powder?
Face powder is the step that tells the rest of your makeup to stay put. It soaks up surface oil, softens the look of pores and gives your base a smooth, finished feel. The two formats you will see most are loose powder and pact, sometimes called pressed powder or compact.
Loose powder
Loose powder comes in a jar or sifter. It is very fine and usually translucent, so it sets makeup without adding colour or weight. It is the better choice for baking and setting a whole face at home.
Pact or pressed powder
A pact is powder pressed into a compact with a mirror and puff. It often has a light tint and a little coverage, which makes it handy for evening out shine and redness on the go. It travels well in a handbag.
Sebum and mineral powders
Korean sebum powders are a category of their own. They are ultra-light loose powders built to absorb oil, with a velvety, almost weightless finish. Many people wear them on bare skin over sunscreen, with no foundation at all.
Choosing face powder by skin type
Powder & Pact for oily skin
Oily skin is where powder earns its place. Choose a translucent, oil-absorbing loose powder and press it onto the forehead, nose and chin with a puff instead of sweeping it everywhere. Pressing pushes the powder into the base so it holds longer. Reapply a tiny amount after blotting, rather than layering on top of an oily surface.
Dry skin
Dry skin can look tight and flaky under too much powder. Moisturise well, use a fluffy brush and apply a whisper only where makeup creases, such as the sides of the nose. Skip powder on the cheeks or use a finely milled, soft-finish formula.
Combination skin
Set the T-zone and leave the cheeks alone. This keeps shine down in the centre while your cheeks keep a healthy glow, which looks more natural in photographs.
Sensitive and acne-prone skin
Choose simple, fragrance-free powders and wash your puff often. A dirty puff spreads oil back onto the face. If a powder makes your skin feel itchy or tight, stop using it.
Is face powder good for skin?
Face powder is a cosmetic, not skincare, but used well it is perfectly kind to most skin. It sits on the surface, absorbs oil and helps your sunscreen and makeup wear longer. Problems come from old puffs, skipping cleansing at night and piling on heavy layers. Cleanse thoroughly every evening, wash your applicators and powder will simply do its job.
How to use face powder
- Finish skincare and sunscreen and let them settle for a few minutes.
- Apply base and concealer if you wear them.
- Tap a small amount of powder onto a puff or brush and knock off the excess.
- Press it onto the T-zone and anywhere makeup creases.
- Dust lightly over the rest of the face only if you need it.
Setting vs touching up
Setting happens once, straight after your base. Touching up happens through the day. For touch-ups, blot first with a tissue or blotting paper, then press on the smallest amount. Adding powder over oil creates a cakey patch.
Powder on bare skin
On hot days, sunscreen plus an oil-control powder is enough makeup for many people. It keeps the face matte and fresh without the feel of foundation.
How to choose a face powder
Translucent or tinted
Translucent powder adds no colour, so it works on every complexion and will not change the shade of your foundation. Tinted powder adds a little coverage, which helps on bare skin but can look heavy over a full base. On warm and olive skin, avoid stark white powders in flash photos; a finely milled translucent or a soft peach tint looks more natural.
Finish
Matte powders keep shine down longest. Satin or soft-focus powders blur pores while letting a little glow through, which flatters drier and mature skin.
Applicator
A velour puff gives the firmest set and the most oil control. A large fluffy brush gives the lightest, most natural veil. A small tapered brush is ideal for setting under the eyes and around the nose without dusting the whole face.
Powder in Pakistan's weather
Heat, humidity and dust all work against makeup here. In summer and the monsoon, keep a small jar of loose powder at home and a pact or blotting papers in your bag. Avoid heavy layers on sticky days; they mix with sweat and slide. In winter, many people can drop powder from the cheeks entirely and use it only on the nose. Store powder with the lid closed so it does not collect dust or absorb moisture from the air.
