What is a lip tint, and what is it used for?
A lip tint is a lightweight liquid, gel or water-based colour that sinks into the top layer of the lips and leaves a stain. Unlike a creamy lipstick, it does not sit as a thick layer, so the colour looks like your own lips, only brighter. Which lip tint shade suits brown skin?

To wear any tint on dry lips, smooth a thin balm on first, wait a minute and blot it away so the colour still grips. Avoid licking your lips through the day, use a rich lip mask at night, and skip fixing tints during dry winter months or long flights if your lips are peeling.
Lip tints for oily skin: wearing tint as blush
Tints are a clever trick for oily and combination skin. Powder blush can slide off or turn patchy on an oily face by the afternoon, while a liquid tint stains the skin and stays put. Dot a tiny amount onto the apples of your cheeks over your base, then tap it in quickly with a fingertip before it sets. Water tints and juicy tints blend most easily; fixing tints dry fast, so work one cheek at a time.
How to use lip tints
For a soft, blurred everyday look
- Start with clean, balm-free lips so the stain can grip.
- Press the applicator to the inner part of your lips only.
- Pat outwards with a fingertip so the colour fades towards the edges.
- Press your lips together once and leave it to set.
For full colour that lasts
- Line the shape lightly with the tip of the applicator or a lip liner close to your shade.
- Fill in with a thin coat, wait a minute and blot with a tissue.
- Add a second thin coat for depth, then tidy the edges with a cotton bud.
Adding shine or volume on top

How to take lip stain off
Long-wear tints are made to cling, so water alone will not remove them. Press a cotton pad soaked in cleansing oil or balm onto your lips for ten seconds, then wipe gently from the corners inwards. Repeat rather than scrubbing. A faint pink stain the next morning is normal and fades by itself; finish with lip balm or a sleeping mask overnight.
