About Concealers

What are concealers used for?

Concealer is a concentrated, more pigmented cousin of foundation. You use it only where you need it: on a spot, around the nose, over a patch of redness or under the eyes. Because it is applied in small amounts, it can offer far more coverage than your base without making the whole face look heavy.

Concealer vs foundation

Foundation evens out the face as a whole; concealer targets the details. Many people in Pakistan skip foundation altogether in summer and wear sunscreen, a dab of concealer and powder instead. If you do wear a base, it usually goes on first so you need less concealer afterwards. Find matching bases in our Cushion & Foundation edit.

Types of concealer and what each is good at

Liquid concealer

A liquid with a wand or doe-foot applicator spreads easily and suits larger areas such as under-eyes and around the nose. Long-wear liquids set to a thin, flexible layer that holds well through a humid day.

Cream and palette concealer

A cream in a pan or palette is thicker and more opaque. It is ideal for spot coverage, and a palette lets you mix two shades for a closer match or to colour-correct.

Stick concealer

Sticks are quick and portable. They work well for touch-ups, but a firm stick can drag across dry or textured skin, so warm it on the back of your hand first.

Choosing concealer by concern and skin type

Concealers for acne and blemishes

Active spots and dark marks left behind by breakouts need opaque, long-wear coverage. Use a small brush or fingertip to press a tiny dot directly on the mark, then soften only the edges. Avoid rubbing, which lifts coverage and irritates the spot. Clean your brush often and take concealer off fully every night so it does not sit in pores.

Concealers for oily skin

Oil breaks concealer down quickly, especially on the nose and chin. Choose a long-wear formula, apply a thin layer and set it immediately with a little loose powder. Blotting papers through the afternoon help more than adding layer after layer.

Dry skin and the under-eye area

The skin under the eyes is thin and creases easily. Pat on an eye cream first and let it sink in, then use a creamy concealer sparingly. Set with the lightest possible touch of powder, or skip it if your skin is very dry.

Dark circles

Dark circles on warm and olive skin often look bluish-brown. A peach or orange-toned corrector, or a concealer with a warm, peachy undertone, cancels that shadow better than a pale beige. Apply only where the darkness sits, near the inner corner, rather than painting a large triangle.

Finding your concealer shade

For spots and redness, match your concealer exactly to your skin or your foundation so it disappears. For under-eyes, go no more than half a shade brighter, and pick a warm undertone. A concealer that is much paler than your skin looks grey on deeper complexions and draws attention to the area you wanted to hide. Swatch in daylight near your jaw and under one eye before deciding.

How to use concealers

  1. Finish your skincare and sunscreen, then wait a few minutes.
  2. Apply your base, if you wear one, so you can see what is still showing.
  3. Dot concealer only on spots, redness and the inner under-eye.
  4. Tap with a fingertip, small brush or damp sponge until the edges melt away.
  5. Set with a thin layer of powder on oily or crease-prone areas.

Wearing concealer without foundation

Concealer on bare skin is the easiest light-makeup look for hot weather. Moisturise, apply sunscreen, conceal only what bothers you and set lightly. It looks fresher than a full base and is quick to touch up.

Colour correcting: when concealer alone is not enough

Sometimes a skin-match concealer simply sits grey on top of a very dark or very red area. That is when a colour corrector helps. It goes on first, in a thin layer, and your concealer follows.

Peach and orange for shadows

Peach suits lighter complexions and orange suits medium to deep skin. Both cancel the blue-brown tone of dark circles and the shadow of pigmented marks around the mouth.

Green for redness

A whisper of green neutralises angry spots and redness around the nose. Use it sparingly; too much leaves a muddy tint that is harder to cover than the redness was.

Making concealer last through heat, humidity and long days

Summer in Pakistan tests every concealer. Sweat and oil lift coverage from the nose and chin first, and dust sticks to anything tacky. Keep layers thin, set straight away and carry blotting papers rather than a second tube. At weddings and long dholkis, a light mist of setting spray over powder helps your coverage survive the dance floor. In the monsoon, choose long-wear formulas and avoid heavy creams around the T-zone.

Concealers: your questions

What is concealer used for in makeup?

Concealer is used to cover specific areas such as spots, acne marks, redness and dark circles. It is more pigmented than foundation, so a small amount gives strong coverage exactly where you need it without making the whole face look heavy.

Should I apply concealer before or after foundation?

Apply it after foundation in most cases. The base evens out the face first, so you can see what still needs covering and use less concealer. If you are using a colour corrector, that goes on before foundation.

Can I use concealer without foundation?

Yes. Concealer on bare skin is a light, comfortable look for hot weather. Moisturise and apply sunscreen first, conceal only the areas that bother you, and set lightly with powder so it lasts.

How do I cover dark circles on brown skin?

Use a peach or orange-toned corrector, or a concealer with a warm peachy undertone, on the darkest part near the inner corner. Then blend a concealer that matches your skin on top. Pale beige concealers often look grey on deeper skin.

Which concealer is best for acne-prone skin?

A long-wear, opaque concealer applied in tiny dots works best for acne marks. Press it on with a clean brush rather than rubbing, clean tools often and remove all makeup at night. Patch-test new formulas if your skin is reactive.

How do I stop concealer creasing under my eyes?

Use less product and prep well. Apply eye cream, let it absorb, pat on a thin layer of concealer and set with a very light touch of powder. Wait a minute, then tap away any creases with your ring finger.

What shade of concealer should I choose?

Match your skin exactly for spots and redness. For under-eyes, choose no more than half a shade brighter with a warm undertone. Test in daylight on your jaw and under one eye before buying.

How long does concealer last once opened?

Most liquid and cream concealers are best used within about a year of opening. Check the open-jar symbol on the pack, keep the cap tightly closed and store it away from heat and direct sun. Replace it if the smell or texture changes.
