About Hair Supplements

What are hair supplements?

Hair supplements are tablets, capsules, gummies or powders that contain vitamins, minerals or proteins linked to hair, skin and nails. The most common ingredients are biotin (vitamin B7), collagen peptides, zinc, iron and blends with vitamins such as D and E. They are food supplements, not medicines, and they work alongside your diet rather than replacing it.

It helps to be realistic. Hair grows slowly from the follicle, so any change takes months to show, and most people who eat a varied diet already get enough of these nutrients. Supplements tend to matter most when a doctor has found a genuine shortfall.

Best Hair Supplements in Pakistan: how to choose

Our supplement shelf is being stocked now. When you compare options, use these checks.

Check what is actually inside

Read the full ingredient panel, not just the front of the pack. Note every vitamin and mineral, and add up amounts if you already take a multivitamin, so you do not double up.

Biotin tablets vs multi-nutrient blends

Single-ingredient biotin is the most searched option in Pakistan, but hair depends on many nutrients at once. A blend may make more sense for some people, while others need a specific nutrient their doctor has identified. Neither should be chosen on hype alone.

Look for clear labelling

A trustworthy pack lists the manufacturer, batch number, expiry date, storage advice and a recommended daily amount. Avoid products that promise dramatic regrowth or results in days.

Hair supplements for oily skin and dry skin

If you have oily skin

Supplements do not switch off oil production, and some people notice breakouts when they start high-strength biotin. If your skin is oily or acne-prone, mention it to your doctor and watch your skin for the first few weeks.

If you have dry skin and dry hair

Dryness usually comes from the outside: hot showers, hard water, harsh cleansers and low humidity in winter. Fix those first with a gentle routine and a weekly hair mask. Drink enough water, eat healthy fats, and ask a doctor before adding any supplement.

How to use hair supplements

  1. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medicines or managing a health condition.
  2. Take the amount on the label and no more; higher doses are not better.
  3. Take them at the same time each day, with food if the pack suggests it.
  4. Give any change at least three months before judging it, and stop if you notice side effects.
  5. Tell your doctor you take biotin before any blood test, because high doses can affect some lab results.

Tablets, capsules, gummies or powders?

The format matters less than the contents. Tablets and capsules are compact and usually the simplest to dose. Gummies are pleasant to take but often contain sugar, so count them as a sweet and keep them away from children. Collagen usually comes as a powder because the amounts are larger; stir it into tea, lassi or a smoothie.

Storing supplements in Pakistan's heat

Heat and humidity can soften gummies and degrade vitamins. Keep packs tightly closed in a cool, dry cupboard, never in a hot car or on a sunny windowsill, and avoid the bathroom, where steam builds up. Check the expiry date before each new course.

Food first: nutrition for hair

A plate with eggs, lentils, fish or chicken, nuts, seeds and green vegetables covers much of what hair needs. Daal and roti with a protein side, seasonal fruit and a handful of almonds are a practical everyday base. Crash dieting and long fasts without balanced meals are a common reason for temporary shedding a few months later.

When shedding needs a doctor, not a tablet

See a dermatologist for ongoing hair fall, patches, a widening parting or a sore, scaly scalp. A doctor may test iron, vitamin D or thyroid levels and guide you from there. Good external care still matters; our scalp care and hair oils and serums guides cover the roots and the lengths.

Hair Supplements: your questions

What hair supplements actually work?

Supplements are most likely to make a difference when a doctor has found a real nutrient shortfall, such as low iron or vitamin D. For people with a balanced diet and normal levels, evidence that extra vitamins change hair is limited. Ask a doctor before starting any.

Do biotin tablets regrow hair?

There is no reliable evidence that biotin regrows hair in people who already have normal biotin levels, and true deficiency is uncommon. If you are losing hair, see a dermatologist to find the cause rather than relying on biotin alone.

How long should I take hair supplements?

Follow the label and your doctor's advice. Because hair grows slowly, any visible change takes around three months or more. Do not take supplements indefinitely without review, and stop if you notice side effects.

What foods are high in biotin?

Eggs (especially the yolk), nuts, seeds, salmon, sweet potatoes, lentils and other legumes are good food sources of biotin. A varied diet built around these foods gives most people enough biotin without supplements.

Is biotin good for nails?

Some people take biotin for brittle nails, but the evidence is limited and comes mainly from small studies. Keep nails moisturised, wear gloves for washing up, and check with a doctor before taking biotin for this reason.

Can I take hair vitamins with other supplements?

Only after checking the combined amounts with a doctor or pharmacist. Many multivitamins already contain biotin, zinc or iron, and doubling up can push intake higher than you need. Bring all your packs to the appointment.

Are hair supplements safe during pregnancy?

Do not take hair supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor approves them. Your doctor may already prescribe a pregnancy vitamin, and adding another product could double some nutrients.
