About Eyeliner & Pencils

Pencil, gel or liquid: which eyeliner is best?

Each eyeliner format draws a different kind of line, so the best one is the one that matches the look you wear most.

Pencil and kohl eyeliner

A classic pencil gives a soft, slightly smoky line that is forgiving if your hand shakes. Kohl and kajal-style pencils are creamier and darker, perfect for the waterline and for the deep, defined eyes so loved in Pakistani bridal and festive looks.

Gel pencil eyeliner

Gel pencils glide on like a crayon, then set to a long-wearing finish. You get a few seconds to smudge or adjust before they lock in place, which makes them a good middle ground between pencil and liquid.

Liquid and pen eyeliner

Liquid liners use a fine brush, while pen liners have a felt or brush tip in a marker-style body. Both give a crisp, intense black line and the sharpest wing. They take more practice, but they last well once dry.

Is liquid or pencil eyeliner better for beginners? Start with a pencil or gel pencil. Mistakes are easy to blend away, and once you are confident, a pen liner is the natural next step.

Choosing a liner shape for your eyes

  • Almond eyes: almost any style works; a thin line with a short flick is the easiest everyday look.
  • Hooded eyes: keep the line thin at the inner corner and draw the wing with your eyes open, so it is not hidden by the lid fold.
  • Monolids: a slightly thicker line that is visible when the eye is open defines the shape best.
  • Round eyes: extend the line outwards past the outer corner to elongate.
  • Small or close-set eyes: line only the outer two-thirds, and try a nude or white pencil on the lower waterline to open the eye up.

Eyeliner for oily skin and Pakistan's heat

Oily lids are the main reason eyeliner transfers or fades into a grey shadow by afternoon, especially through humid Karachi summers and the monsoon. Look for liners labelled waterproof, smudge-proof or long-wear, and prefer gel or liquid formulas, which set harder than creamy kohl. Skip rich eye cream in the morning, prime the lids with an eyeshadow primer and set a pencil line with a matching dark shadow pressed on top. For the lower lash line, a quick-setting gel pencil holds up better than a soft kajal.

How to use eyeliner and pencils

A simple pencil line for beginners

  1. Warm the pencil tip on the back of your hand so it glides.
  2. Look down into a mirror and draw short dashes along the upper lash line.
  3. Join the dashes, staying as close to the lashes as you can.
  4. Soften the line with a small smudge brush if you want a smoky finish.

Drawing a wing with a pen liner

Imagine a line running from your lower lash line up towards the tail of your brow. Draw a short flick along that angle from the outer corner, then connect the tip of the flick back to the middle of the upper lash line. Fill in the gap. Clean up with a cotton bud dipped in micellar water rather than redrawing.

Lining the bottom lid and waterline

Gently pull the lower lid down, look up and glide a soft, sharpened pencil along the inner rim. Use only eye-safe pencils on the waterline and sharpen them before each use. On the outer lower lash line, a thin smudged line looks more natural than a hard stroke.

Best Eyeliner & Pencils in Pakistan: what to look for

Our eyeliner shelf is being restocked, and new pencils and liners are on their way. When choosing any eyeliner, check for these qualities:

  • A smudge-proof or waterproof claim if your lids get oily.
  • An ophthalmologist-tested or eye-safe label if you line your waterline or wear contact lenses.
  • A shade that suits you: black for drama, brown for softer daytime definition.
  • A self-sharpening or retractable pencil for easy, hygienic touch-ups on the go.

Removing eyeliner and keeping pencils clean

Waterproof and gel liners need an oil-based cleanser or bi-phase remover; hold it against the closed eye before wiping outwards. Sharpen pencils regularly to remove the used surface, keep caps on tightly and replace liquid liners every three to four months. Never share eye pencils.

More from the eye makeup edit

Pair your liner with lashes and brows from the wider eye makeup collection: lengthen with mascara, add drama with eye lashes, frame the face with brows and add colour with eyeshadow and primer. Explore the full makeup range too.

Eyeliner & Pencils: your questions

Is liquid or pencil eyeliner better for beginners?

Pencil eyeliner is better for beginners. It is softer, easy to smudge if you make a mistake and does not need a perfectly steady hand. Once you are comfortable, move to a gel pencil and then a pen liner for sharper wings.

What is the difference between eyeliner and eyebrow pencil?

An eyeliner pencil is creamier and more pigmented so it glides on the delicate lid and waterline. An eyebrow pencil is firmer, drier and comes in hair-like shades, so it draws fine strokes that look like real brow hairs. Do not swap them on the waterline.

What are eyeliner pencils made of?

Eyeliner pencils are mostly waxes and oils that let the lead glide, mixed with pigments such as iron oxides or carbon black for colour. Long-wear and gel pencils add film-forming ingredients that help the line set and resist smudging.

How do I apply eyeliner pencil on the bottom lid?

Pull the lower lid down gently, look up and glide a freshly sharpened, eye-safe pencil along the lash line or inner rim. Keep the line thin and smudge it slightly for a softer look. Remove it fully at night to avoid irritation.

What is a gel eyeliner pencil?

A gel eyeliner pencil is a creamy, gel-textured liner in a twist-up or wooden pencil. It glides on smoothly, gives a deep colour and then sets to a long-wear finish, which makes it popular for humid weather.

How do I stop eyeliner smudging on oily lids?

Choose a waterproof gel or liquid liner, skip heavy eye cream in the morning and prime your lids first. Pressing a matching dark eyeshadow over a pencil line also helps it stay put through heat and humidity.

Is it safe to use eyeliner on the waterline?

Yes, if the pencil is labelled safe for the eye area, kept sharpened and never shared. Contact lens wearers and people with sensitive eyes should line only the outer lash line and remove liner every night.
