About Sensitive Skin

Skincare for sensitive skin in Pakistan: start here

If almost every new cream makes your face prickle, you probably have a sensitive skin type. This page is for building a calm, everyday routine around that skin type: which cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen to keep on your shelf for the long run.

Dealing with a flare-up right now, such as sudden redness, stinging or a reaction to a product? Our Sensitivity concern page focuses on calming skin in that moment. Think of this page as the wardrobe and that one as the first-aid kit; most people with reactive skin need both.

What is sensitive skin type?

Dermatologists use "sensitive skin" to describe how skin behaves rather than a single condition. Your skin may feel tight, warm or itchy after products that other people use with no problem. It can sit on top of any base type, so you can be sensitive and oily, or sensitive and dry, at the same time.

Signs your skin type is sensitive

  • Products often sting for more than a few seconds after you apply them.
  • Your cheeks flush quickly in heat, after exercise or after a hot shower.
  • Fragranced creams, strong soaps or scrubs leave dry, rough or bumpy patches.
  • Your face feels uncomfortable after threading, waxing or a facial.

When it might be something more

Sensitivity can be a symptom of rosacea, eczema, allergic contact dermatitis or an over-exfoliated barrier. If redness stays for weeks, burns, swells or spreads, please see a dermatologist rather than adding more products.

Why sensitive skin reacts so easily

Healthy skin has an outer layer that works like a brick wall: skin cells are the bricks and natural fats are the mortar. In reactive skin, that mortar is thinner or patchy. Water escapes faster and irritants slip in more easily, so nerve endings send "sting" signals sooner.

In Pakistan, that weak wall gets tested every day. Strong UV, long humid summers, dusty roads, hard tap water and cold, dry winters with gas heaters all push skin in different directions. Add a routine with too many actives and even sturdy skin can start acting sensitive.

How to use skincare for sensitive skin: a routine that stays calm

The kindest routine is short. Every extra step is one more chance for a reaction, so aim for four or five products you trust.

Morning steps

  1. Rinse with cool water, or use a gentle low-pH cleanser if you wake up oily.
  2. Pat on a hydrating, alcohol-free toner with your palms, not a cotton pad.
  3. Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser suited to your base type.
  4. Finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen, reapplied if you are outdoors.

Evening steps

  1. Melt off sunscreen and makeup with a cleansing oil or balm.
  2. Follow with a soft gel or cream cleanser and lukewarm water.
  3. Use one soothing serum, such as centella or panthenol.
  4. Seal everything with a barrier cream, a little thicker in winter.

How to add a new product safely

Test it along the jawline or behind the ear for three evenings. If nothing itches or reddens, use it every other day for a week before moving to daily use. Introduce one product at a time so you always know the cause if something goes wrong.

Sensitive skin for oily, dry and combination types

Sensitive skin for oily skin

Shine does not mean your skin is tough. Skip stripping foam washes and gritty scrubs; they leave oily, reactive skin tight and even shinier. A mild gel cleanser, a watery toner and a light gel cream usually work best. See our Oily Skin edit for more lightweight textures.

Sensitive skin for dry skin

Dry, sensitive skin needs cushioning. Choose cream cleansers, layer a hydrating toner, and use a richer moisturiser with ceramides or panthenol. Our Normal to Dry Skin edit has more nourishing creams and balms.

Sensitive and combination skin

Use one gentle base routine for the whole face, then adjust by zone: a light layer on the T-zone and an extra layer of cream on the cheeks. Browse the Combination Skin edit for balancing picks.

Ingredients that suit sensitive skin

Soothing botanicals

Centella asiatica, heartleaf, mugwort, oat and green tea are favourites in Korean formulas for comforting reactive skin. They help skin look less red and feel less hot.

Barrier builders

Ceramides, panthenol, squalane and cholesterol help rebuild that "mortar" between skin cells, so your face holds water better and reacts less over time.

Gentle hydrators

Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, beta-glucan and snail mucin add water without heaviness, which matters in humid summers.

Actives, used slowly

Sensitive skin can still use vitamin C, niacinamide, retinoids and acids. Start with lower strengths, apply two or three times a week, and buffer with moisturiser. Vitamin C derivatives and niacinamide at modest levels are usually easier to tolerate than strong pure forms.

Common triggers to avoid

Added fragrance, essential oils, high amounts of drying alcohol, menthol, physical scrubs and layering several acids at once cause the most trouble.

Sunscreen for sensitive skin

Daily sunscreen protects reactive skin from UV, which can trigger flushing and leave lasting uneven tone. Mineral filters such as zinc oxide sit on top of skin and rarely sting. Many modern Korean and European chemical sunscreens are also very gentle and leave no white cast on deeper skin tones. If a formula stings your eyes, keep it away from the lids and use a sun stick there instead.

Cleansing oil or balm for sensitive skin?

Both remove sunscreen without rubbing, which is why reactive skin likes them. Oils feel lighter and rinse fast, so they suit summer and oilier skin. Balms are thicker and more cushioning, so they suit dry winter skin. Either way, massage gently onto dry skin, add water until it turns milky, and rinse well.

Living with sensitive skin in Pakistan

  • Hot summers: rinse off sweat after the school run or commute, and keep layers thin.
  • Hard water: finish with a hydrating toner to calm the dry, tight feel after washing.
  • Threading and waxing: skip acids and retinoids for a day before and after, and apply a soothing cream.
  • Mehndi and festive makeup: patch-test new cosmetics a few days before an event, not on the day.
  • Storage: keep products away from sunny windowsills and hot cars, as heat can make formulas more irritating.

Sensitive Skin: your questions

What is sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin is skin that reacts more easily than average, with stinging, burning, itching, redness or tightness after products, weather changes or cleansing. It describes how skin behaves and can occur with oily, dry or combination skin.

What is sensitive skin a symptom of?

Sensitive skin is often a sign of a weakened skin barrier, but it can also be a symptom of rosacea, eczema or a contact allergy. If redness, burning or bumps persist, a dermatologist can find the cause.

How do I know if my skin is sensitive or just irritated?

Sensitive skin reacts again and again to many triggers, while irritation is usually a one-off reaction to a specific product. If stopping one product settles your skin within days, it was likely irritation.

How should I use retinol if I have sensitive skin?

Start with a low-strength retinol twice a week at night, on dry skin, after moisturiser if needed. Increase slowly over several weeks and always wear sunscreen in the morning. Bakuchiol is a gentler option if retinol still stings.

Can I use tretinoin on sensitive skin?

Tretinoin is a prescription retinoid, so use it only under a doctor's guidance. Dermatologists often suggest a pea-sized amount on alternate nights with plenty of moisturiser, and strict sun protection, for reactive skin.

Is vitamin C serum good for sensitive skin?

Vitamin C can suit sensitive skin if you choose a gentle form or lower strength and introduce it slowly. Strong pure vitamin C at a low pH is more likely to sting, so patch-test first and use it a few times a week.

Is niacinamide safe for sensitive skin?

Niacinamide is usually well tolerated and can help support the skin barrier. Very high strengths can cause flushing in some people, so start with a modest percentage and use it once a day before increasing.

Which sunscreen suits sensitive skin best?

Fragrance-free sunscreens with mineral filters such as zinc oxide, or gentle modern chemical filters, suit sensitive skin best. Choose SPF 50 for Pakistan's sun and patch-test, especially around the eyes.

Is Korean skincare good for sensitive skin in Pakistan?

Yes, many Korean formulas suit sensitive skin because they favour mild cleansers, light layers and calming ingredients such as centella and heartleaf. Choose original products, as fakes and expired stock are more likely to cause reactions.

Can sensitive skin use exfoliants?

Yes, but gently and rarely. A mild PHA or lactic acid once a week is usually enough. Avoid scrubs and strong acid peels, and stop exfoliating completely if your skin is already stinging or red.

Is unscented the same as fragrance-free?

Not always. Fragrance-free means no fragrance has been added, while unscented can mean a masking scent was used to cover the smell of other ingredients. Check the ingredient list for parfum or fragrance.

How long should I wait before trying another new product?

Wait at least one to two weeks between new products. That gives your skin time to show any delayed reaction and makes it easy to know which product caused a problem.
