About Lipsticks

Lipstick, lip tint or lip liner: what is the difference?

A lipstick is a solid bullet of colour in a twist-up tube. It gives opaque, even colour in one or two swipes and a defined edge, which is why it remains the classic choice for weddings, office days and photographs.

A tint is a liquid or gel that stains the lips with a lighter, sheerer feel; you will find those in Lip Tints. A pencil shapes and outlines; see Lip Pencils & Liners. Glosses and oils, which add shine more than colour, live in Lip Oils & Gloss.

What is lipstick made of?

Most lipsticks are a blend of waxes, which give the bullet its shape, oils and emollients, which help it glide and keep lips comfortable, and pigments, which provide the colour. Matte formulas use more powder and less oil, so they look velvety and last longer but can feel drier. Cream and satin formulas use more oil, so they feel softer and show a gentle sheen.

Lipstick finishes explained

Matte

Matte lipstick has no shine and a soft, blurred look. It is long-wearing and does not slide in heat, which makes it popular in Pakistan. Korean mattes tend to be lighter and less flat than traditional ones, with a smooth, almost powdery feel.

Satin and cream

Satin and cream lipsticks have a slight sheen and feel more cushioned. They are kinder to dry lips but need more touch-ups after meals and tea.

Sheer and balmy

Sheer lipsticks give a wash of colour with moisture, close to a tinted balm. They are easy to wear without a mirror and suit casual, no-makeup days.

Choosing lipstick for your lips and skin

Lipsticks for oily skin

Oily skin around the mouth can make lipstick bleed into fine lines, known as feathering, especially on hot days. A matte formula, a light layer of concealer or powder around the lip line and a liner traced just inside your natural edge keep colour where it belongs. Blot once with a tissue to remove excess oil from the formula.

Lipsticks for dry skin and dry lips

Dry, flaky lips make matte lipstick look patchy. Smooth the lips first with a balm or lip mask, let it sink in for a few minutes and blot away the excess. Choose a satin, cream or comfortable soft-matte formula, and keep a balm in your bag for winter, when dry air and heaters pull moisture from the lips.

Dark or uneven lips

Many people have naturally deeper or uneven lip colour, which is completely normal. To make lipstick show true, dab a little concealer or a peach corrector over the lips and blot before applying colour. Deeper shades such as brick, berry, plum and warm brown cover evenly, while very pale nudes can look grey on darker lips.

Lipstick shades for Pakistani skin tones

Undertone is the key. Warm and olive complexions, very common in Pakistan, suit warm and rosy nudes, terracotta, brick, coral and warm reds. Cool undertones suit mauve, berry and blue-based reds. A good everyday nude should be one or two steps deeper than your natural lip colour.

Lighter skin tones

Rosy pinks, soft corals and pinkish nudes look fresh. A classic red with a slight blue base is a reliable statement shade.

Wheatish and medium skin

Ruddy nudes, rose-brown, cinnamon and brick shades are the sweet spot. They read as polished in daylight and rich under evening lights.

Dusky and deep skin

Look for depth and warmth: chocolate nudes, deep berry, plum, mahogany and orange-red. Skip chalky beige nudes, which can look ashy.

How to use lipsticks

  1. Smooth the lips with a balm and blot off the excess.
  2. Outline with a pencil if you want a crisp edge or to stop feathering.
  3. Apply lipstick from the centre outwards, following the shape of your lips.
  4. Blot with a tissue, then add a second thin layer for depth and wear.
  5. Clean up the edge with a cotton bud or a dab of concealer.

Making lipstick last through meals and chai

Layer thinly and blot between coats so the pigment grips. Matte formulas last longest. After eating, wipe away any patchy colour and reapply rather than layering over the top, which looks uneven.

Using lipstick on the cheeks

A soft matte lipstick doubles as a cream blush in a pinch. Dab a little on the back of your hand, warm it, then tap it onto the cheeks and blend well.

Lipstick for daily wear, Eid and weddings

Which lipstick is good for daily use?

For every day, choose a soft matte or satin nude close to your own lip colour. It survives tea, meetings and the commute, and it never looks like too much under harsh office lights. Pat it on with a fingertip for a diffused, lived-in edge.

Eid, dawats and dinners

Step up to a rose, cinnamon or warm red. Line first so the colour stays crisp through a long meal, and keep the rest of the face soft so the lips lead.

Weddings and long functions

Choose a deeper matte in brick, maroon or a true red, apply in two blotted layers and carry the bullet for one touch-up after dinner. Matte colour also photographs evenly under bright stage lights.

Storing lipstick in Pakistan's heat

A bullet can soften or snap in a hot car or a handbag left in the sun, especially from May to August. Keep lipsticks in a cool drawer, always twist the bullet down before capping, and never leave them on a sunny dressing table. If a lipstick starts to smell waxy or sour, or beads of moisture appear on the surface, it is time to replace it.

Lipsticks: your questions

How do I apply lipstick properly?

Start with smooth, balmed lips and blot off the excess. Line the lips if you want a sharp edge, apply colour from the centre outwards, blot with a tissue and add a second thin layer. Clean the edges with a cotton bud.

Which lipstick is best for dark lips?

Deeper, pigmented shades such as brick, berry, plum and warm brown cover dark lips most evenly. For nudes, dab concealer or a peach corrector over the lips first and choose a nude with warmth rather than a pale beige.

Which lipstick lasts longest?

Matte lipsticks generally last longest because they contain less oil. Apply thin layers, blot between coats and avoid oily food straight after applying. Expect to touch up after a full meal with any lipstick.

What is lipstick feathering, and how do I stop it?

Feathering is when lipstick bleeds into the fine lines around the mouth. Prevent it with a matte formula, a little concealer or powder around the lip line, and a liner traced just inside your natural lip edge.

Is it safe to wear lipstick every day?

Yes, for most people. Keep lips moisturised under your colour, remove lipstick gently each night and replace any product that smells or looks different. Stop using a lipstick if your lips sting, swell or peel.

Can I use lipstick as a lip liner?

Yes. Use a small, firm lip brush to pick up colour from the bullet and trace your lip line, then fill in. It gives a precise edge in exactly the same shade.

Why does matte lipstick look patchy on me?

Usually because the lips are dry. Use a lip mask overnight and a thin balm before applying, blot the balm, then apply matte lipstick in thin layers. Avoid scrubbing cracked lips.

Which lipstick shade suits wheatish skin?

Wheatish and medium skin tones are flattered by ruddy and rosy nudes, rose-brown, cinnamon, brick and warm reds. Choose an everyday nude one or two steps deeper than your natural lips.
